Hey folks, Im in a situation where I had been offered a role as a team lead (lets say level 6) to lead 3 people. I accepted the role and took a slight dip in salary because I wanted to grow as a manager and my previous employer were not giving me this opportunity. Anyway, I arrived to work a few months ago to find that one of the leaders - who wouldve been a peer -had left the company and therefore I inherited their team which is another 16 ics - there is one team lead taking on some of these ics and that team lead reports to me. So now assume that my level is now 9 instead of 6. So instead of a team of 3, I have nearly 20 with 10 of these being directs. They are paying me the same salay as I wouldve got managing a team of 3 meaning they get a lot of bang for their buck - im wondering what you would do in this situation. would you ask for more money, ask for a new contract, etc?! Thoughts? yoe: 12 tc: 100k EDIT: non swe or eng.
To draw your analogy, I should get a pay bump every time an IC joins my org?
You missed half of my post where I refer to the fact that I’ve been bumped up nearly 3 levels !! With each level comes additional responsibility in every company including this one.
Trolling?
I’m not a swe or in the US. Blind does exist for other people FYI. I’ll update the post to state this.
Huge opportunity. Do well in your position and they will promote you.
Thanks !!
I would aim to first see this as a good thing. You are doing a good job and are trusted to lead a larger team. I.e you are delivering value. So during your one on ones and reviews make it clear that you are adding more value and hope to be rewarded/compensated. If your manager doesn’t play ball get specific hurdles for you to earn what you think is fair. If you are not happy in 12 months jump ship with a year of second line management and a team 6 times the size. Also if your local law/contract allows take the team with you.
Thanks for the sound advice. I’d lost all hope in Blind for a hot second :)
I would say if you doing good in the next half year they definitely will raise the package after the eval.
Stay, do a good job, and get promoted. TC bumps can come later and can be from the outside if you decide to switch. Make the most out of the opportunity
promotion without the pay is like a demotion because you have more shit to do and basically get less money. fuck that. straight up ask for more because of the added responsibility. start looking for a new job if they are unable to pay you more.
Prove for a period that your can rock the new responsibilities. I did the same, and then at my performance review, I followed up with a fair comparison of the role I came I for and the role I’ve filled with competitive pay research. One of the easier convos I’ve had, got a huge bump in salary.
Thanks & congrats. :)
