Have you ever point blank asked your manager what you have to do to get promoted? Separated FAANG from non-FAANG because Facebook has an up or out policy that I imagine changes the dynamics
You should always ask this.
Always ask your manager. Remember, you own your career. Very few managers are proactive enough to take an active interest in your promotion.
Always ask, also work with them to identify measureable KPI you need to achieve to get there
What's KPI?
Key performances indicators
Always ask like this so you have clear direction. Work with your manager to get better.
When I was a manager I always had a list for each report detailing where they were, strengths/weaknesses, and target opportunities to move them along their career paths. We'd review all that once a month or so or whenever the employee wanted. If you dont have a conversation about this, how will you know you're on the same page with your manager?
Is this a serious question? That's the only relevant thing to discuss about career. There are many ways to bring it up ofcourse, like what do you see me achieving in the next year or two to show growth and readiness for next level.
Yeah, I'm pretty new. I thought that promotions were just something handed out to people that were performing their job really well. I guess it goes to show that you really do just need to ask for the things that you want in life.
Even if you are, there's no harm in asking, confirming occasionally. If you are doing well and on track, manager will just say keep doing what you are doing.
Don’t ask for raise or promotion. Believe in karma
Use your one on one meetings with your manager to cover your expectations for promotion. If they don't see you as promotable now, find out what you need to do to meet their expectations. I'd also suggest getting a mentor to ask career advice like this and not rely on an idiotic platform like blind. 😉
Of course, how else would you get a promotion? Hoping it will just happen lol?
