What is the promotion velocity like at SalesForce. For eg. From lead MTS to principle MTS ? What kind of accomplishmenta are required ?
There is a doc which states competencies and how you are eligible to be in next level. Do you have that ?
I just got the offer today - so don't have access to it.. is it possible for you to share it?
Depends on what you got hired at, and what career path...
Where is this
Fastest from smts to pmts I know of is about 18 months. Fastest mts to smts I know of is 9. So I guess doable in 27 months.
Is this duration irrespective of increment/promotion cycle(year)? Can someone be promoted in between ?
Hard to say how long. But this is one place that has low bar and expectations compared to other places I have worked at - for all levels.
For PMTS you should excel in your field. You need to reach cross-team, cross cloud, have visibility in projects, and demonstrate ownership. Drive projects to completion. Also helps if you give presentations at conferences, mentor/tutor, etc etc. Leadership and other soft skills help a lot. During your promotion review, you need to demonstrate clear deliverables that are actionable and have merit. Up until that it’s basically one level for every year of experience you have. LMTS can be a bit trickier with less than 5 years, but I’ve seen it done. There will be people you see or may think don’t deserve the title(it does happen), but there’s usually enough checks and balances in place to prevent nepotism/etc/peter principal/etc. As you go up higher in the ranks, so does the level of approval - I think it’s something like 2 levels higher have to review your promotion request every time. It does come up that people should not be worthy of promotion requests, and will look badly on you as a manager if you keep putting forward shit candidates...
Thanks for the detailed response.
I'm not sure I've met any PMTS at SFDC that meets those requirements. So far, my experience has been a mixed bag. I've met some smart, motivated folks and I've also met some that are more interested in being the "expert" with little ability to design anything, e.g. allegedly deep API building experience and no knowledge of how to use http status codes and/or response headers.
So my role is with the infrastructure team.. is it very different from other software or security?
There’ll be a core competencies doc your manager will share with you. What did you get hired at?
Lmts
It is possible to get promoted every two years, you need at be asking about rsu refreshes....that is salesforce’s problem area....
It really helps if you are white male or female
My guess this person haven't worked at Salesforce and just trolling or pushing personal political agenda. There are lots of managers of all genders and all colors. As anywhere in tech, Indians and Chinese prevail among non white managers, typical problem with candidate pipeline.
Not trolling. I have chatted with people at the highest levels who privately acknowledge this, but publicly stay mum about it. How about other people here in T&P? Let me ask this- of the % of people in your department that are minority vs white is the % of titles proportional. So say 20 people total with half white do you see roughly same % LMTS or higher? At my department there is only one male minority LMTS out of 12 minorities and 7 LMTS out of say 10 white males. I know white males who join at LMTS that underperform (work with them) compared to minorities here for 5+ years stuck at SMTS.
