Hi folks! Need an advise since some of you went through the same thing: Myself (30 years old, Electronics Engineer - HW Design at Amazon, 4 years of experience) and my better half (32 years old, SW - Production Engineer at Facebook, 9 years of experience) are considering to move to Seattle. Reasons: better work life balance (hopefully), cost of living and buying a new house, also we would like to start a family soon. I get that it rains, but I am Russian so I have seen my fair share of bad weather. Any other pros/cons you experienced? Thank you very much in advance!
Do it
Do it.. buy a 5 bedroom house in little over million dollars
Never!! I regret coming to this place from bay area! No life! The weather is not just bad, its worst!! Roads/traffic/parking/food all bad as compared to bay area. If you have kids you will be saving tons as public schools are good here unlike cal! Bay area is beautiful but living expenses are a little bit higher(not much diff) but state tax makes a diff! Weigh it properly before u decide
That’s what I am trying to do here. Weather in Seattle is definitely better than St. Petersburg, Russia... Not sure why ppl complain: maybe you didn’t grow up with rain/snow? How food is worse? It should be plenty of seafood options and Costco sell same stuff everywhere... Does Amazon have shuttles?
Yep, Amazon has shuttles, food options were way better in cal. One example, if you want to go out to some place in santa clara to eat during lunch, you can just pick up ur car and drive. Here u have to settle down with food trucks!! Sometimes at cafe(worst possible food) when it rains
Depressing weather. If you are okay with that then do it.
The weather just is, it is your perception that labels it depressing. I actually enjoy the rain and often wish there was more of it in Seattle. 🤪
Yes. Move to Seattle
I love hearing all the people whine about how terrible Seattle is, yet they stay. Must be so terrible having such high pay relative to col. Lol
I think it makes even more sense for Russians. There are a ton of Russians here, not just tech people. There are many Russian people who immigrated a long time ago. Teachers, electricians, ... you name it. It is easy to find Russian restaurants or bakery as well. Personality of people fits Russians perfectly, too. With your income, buying a nice new home is also possible. Seattle might be too expensive and not good for family though. Consider eastside like Bellevue or Kirkland which has close access to Seattle. 1.5M will get you 3,000 sqft newly built house.
* you’re not gonna start a family, you are a family already
I think Seattle is great for families, and you’re already making a crap ton. Do it

Tipping culture is really getting out of control! Waiter gave me ‘a look’ because I tipped her 10% for ‘BAD service!’
Forgot to mention: move to Seattle from the Bay Area
