Hello everyone, I have offers from Pinterest and Facebook and I'm thinking which one to accept. There is a lot of information about Facebook here and it seems like Facebook has pretty bad wlb but great perks and interesting projects. Not a lot of information about Pinterest is available though. Maybe people from Pinterest can shine some lights on pros and cons working there? Thanks!
I have a friend who worked in fb for 2 years and then moved to Pinterest because he wasn’t being recognized enough. Having a great time there
The future of Pinterest is a bit uncertain. FB is "safer" e.g. we have been pushing execs to IPO for years but we still have no estimate of whether it will ever happen. Both places have solid eng teams but FB has more resources to make eng infra more polished
Pinterest is *probably* less evil.
Lol, I don't care about it that much. People hate FB too much in my opinion.
How does Pinterest actually make any money?
Very good WLB at pinterest if you care about that
I’m working on interesting probs at Pinterest and feel optimistic (for now).
What do you like and dislike about working in Pinterest?
Like: ppl are solid, challenges are what you would expect for a company trying to prove itself in market. Dislike: certain things are political (c.f. the ‘150 rule’ of tribe formations). Overall v happy here - I’ve found work peers I like and admire so this has helped. Salary reasonable but not outstanding.
Pinterest has a lot of interesting problems to work on. The teams are small and impact/ownership is more pronounced than other places. People are nice and WLB is great, especially can't beat wfh wednesdays. In terms of ipo, I think all the unicorns will try to go public next year. Pinterest is in a good position to do so, but you never know. A couple of negatives in my opinion: promo process is slow and feels like google while we have 50x fewer engineers. Some teams are poorly managed, especially ads and infra as mentioned above. It can be a little political sometimes, but this is a problem everywhere. In terms comp, we're trying to hire a lot of seniors and you can get a pretty good deal with competing offers.
Agree w/ promo, it's just easier to be re-hired at next level than getting promoted. But I have more to say on small team. It's kinda depending on where you're now and where u wanna be. Small team w/ big project means good space and opportunity, but ultimately you need workforces to deliver big impact, or you work 2x, 3x hard to accomplish that. Well, if I get a coin every time I hear someone saying "...but we are understaffed to do xyz...", I don't need the IPO!
~3 years at fb and ~2 years at Pinterest here. FB was pretty intense. The unspoken motto is “ship ship ship”. If you don’t ship something with proven impact, you don’t make it pass a couple review cycles. It’s all about showing “impact”. WLB wasn’t that bad in terms of hours (not like 80-hour week at Uber I heard). Also, promotion is hard, especially if you’re in internal-facing team (as opposed to external facing product team). Pinterest: WLB is definitely better than fb. Less structured so there are more opportunities to work on different things. Frequent change of directions because of leadership turnover, especially on the ads side. People are too “nice” to put their foot down on important issues, feels like leadership is just dragging their feet in indecisiveness sometimes.
