Can/should I move to a top finance company as a Quant Researcher? I just joined Google (< 1 Year ago), and I have a PhD from an Ivy school in ML.
Probably you could. Citadel has two related roles: quant researcher (comes up with signals, spends most of their dev time in R/Python) and quant dev (turns signals into $$$s, more coding and less analysis though still a mix, spends most of their dev time in Python / c++). My guess is that low/mid-level researchers have better TC here and rock star ML people have better TC at FAANG.
Do you have any estimation of TC for a quant researcher with my background (PhD +postdoc +1 yoe at google)? Thanks!
It will vary a lot, and you _might_ get a pnl share as part of the TC. If citadel really wants you though they will be able to crush any competing TC from FAANG particularly at low/mid career YOE
What’s your current TC at google?
270K
That is easily beatable by most top trading firms. Just make sure you consider all aspects of QoL - pressure and competition will likely be higher, and most firms will require moving to NYC or Chicago.
Aside from the ones you already heard about, try Vatic, they like PhD stats specialists. You'll work your ass off but the money will be worth it. I think you clearly are bored, so it would be the right move.
Thanks! You’re right! I’m really bored here and try to find more challenging opportunities
Keep us posted on this thread what you find. I'm looking too since I'm bored like crazy here, I have a math + ML engineer/data scientist background but am having some trouble since most places seem to want hardcore devs.

Google doing more layoffs, restructuring including country moves
Tbh, I like making money. I’d like to save some money and start my own company. However, @Google, I feel like I’m just wasting my time (everything is much slower than my pace) and seems that no body cares.
OP you are totally right, Google is very slow and hires less smarter people than Quant Researchers at top finance firms like HRT, Citadel etc. You should definitely start preparing.
