Hi I want to ask our blind community for some of the effective ways they use to manage their technical teams , ML teams specifically . As a Facebook , LinkedIn or google managers who really feel they are making a difference and helping their teams achieve something greater . How do you set the teams goals ? How do you effectively measure them ? How much of design and architecture reviews you do ? How much of research guidance do you provide in the projects . How about managing expectations from the team from a technical stand point ( do you read papers , tech blogs , try things out to keep yourself up to date ) I know there is a bad reputation of managers and want to get some good tips to be a effective one ,people who believe they are effectively managing their teams . Thanks for your help.
Can I ask you why your sentence always has a space at the end before marking a period? I say this before so I am wondering if it is Blind bug or just habit.
Sorry , I think it may be a typo. I may not have paid attention to the punctuations while posting.
The best leaders are the ones who are able to hide the upper management politics and shifting priorities from their team. It’s always chaos up there and half the time there isn’t really a grand plan, but they don’t need to worry about it. Most workers are not able to deal with that and stay productive and happy.
Im not a manager, and don't work in ML. However, as an engineer, I always appreciate managers who know their stuff but don't try too hard to show it. Be familiar with state of the field but don't try to show off because you will probably irritate them. Focus on what you can do to keep the people above you happy without unnecessarily passing the bullshit onto your team. My best managers have been those that let me handle the tech and they take care of everything else. My worst have been those that micromanage and try to brown nose the people above them, at my expense (usually unrealistic deadlines). Sorry if I don't match the demographic you were shooting for, just thought id give my 2 cents.
Thanks for that perspective that’s very helpful
And if you copy-paste an email from your reports at least give him credit for that, don't make it look that you wrote it. And be fair to people according to their competence, not ethnicity or friendship.
