I'm working full time as a software engineer at Capital One and I am also a part time masters student. I've been thinking of going back to school full time so that I can finish my masters faster. My school will pay for my masters if I TA for them so I don't need to worry about that. I applied to summer internships and got an offer from Amazon to intern over the summer. Is it worth it to quit my full time job to intern since the internship will be at Amazon which is better than Capital One? My current TC is about $9416 monthly. At Amazon I would get $7900 + $1900 (post tax stipend) per month
Only if your intern position at Amazon strongly relates to your masters and if your masters is significantly different than your current role at Capital one. Also If you want to just join Amazon you can always directly apply for FTE roles , there are thousands of Amazon recruiters looking to fill their open positions.
Smart perspective. Taking advantage of your degree would be valuable and fulfilling
Yeah my current role isn't related to my focus for my masters. But I'm also not sure what I'll be doing at Amazon so idk if that will be related either.
There's gonna be a lot of opinions. Some of the TC jockies will say go for Amazon because it's Faang. It would also be good for your career. Your personal respect and sanity might suffer though. What do you want to get out of it?
The work I'm doing currently isn't stuff I'm interested in or related to my focus. I was thinking of doing an internship so that I could get experience somewhere else, try something new and have it be short term so that it's not too much commitment if I don't like it. The Amazon offer is in another location so it'd also be nice to move somewhere else short term. I'm worried about what I will do if I don't like Amazon tho, then I'll be out of a job
Capital one is a good company. They don’t pay that much but their long term prospects are solid in my opinion. If you focus on climbing ladder you can get as much tc as anywhere else, that is there
No
100%, Amazon is a way better name than C1 and will open lots of doors for you
^^^*In Morgan Freeman* He's right, you know.
You should move to Amazon, it's difficult for tdps to move later on due to bad projects.
Let me guess. Are you doing OMSCS? 😁
Nope different masters
Gotcha. I still don’t recommend quitting fulltime job to do internship at Amazon. They don’t even have good reputation. Unless you want a fulltime job there. Or you can just apply full-time at Amazon. They always hire alot.
How much YOE of experience do you have? You could just come in as a full time sde
I have around 2ish years of experience working full time. I didn't apply for a full time roll because after this summer I will just have at least another year of my masters
I did exactly this. Had one semester left on my masters after the internship. Had 3 years experience prior to leaving full time software position for internship. Your mileage may vary depending on the team you get put on. You won’t have a choice unless you applied for something specialized like a scientist position or robotics. I lucked out and got put on a team with a very good manager and a mentor who went above and beyond. My biggest regret is now I am under leveled. I have friends who started their careers at the same time as me and came in without the internship at L5. If I could do it again I’d go the full time route.
Best response imo
After your internship did you get to negotiate your level coming into full time at all?
