Got nothing lined up. I've been thinking a lot about my next career move but I just can't stand my working environment. It's not toxic but just full of incompentence. Only the few engineers who know what to do actually DO, or worst, senior engineers are so outdated, they don't know the basics. What triggered me to write this, is that I just walked out of a heated conversation over freaking CSV comma delimited ASCII. A senior engineer implemented his own interpretation of the format and his own parser. I, 4 YOE, pointed it out that the format is incorrect and no other tool can parse this custom format, even Microsoft interprets it differently, the senior was just arrgorant. This isn't the first, many issues arise when consumers have to consume all these clunky code. Conversation feel like a uphill battle to persuade the other, versus "I know the ideal, how can we make it possible?". Nothing here is innovative, even the CICD pipeline is shit. Guess what, I have to build it from scratch. All this has just been eating away at me, I've lost patience, even to the point where I don't come in for work. I just want out. Spend my time leetcoding and preparing. Edit: I quitted.
This is so comical, I literally agree with every single point you have listed here. It’s almost like I wrote this post like holy shit haha so spot on. I’m 4 yoe myself and everything you said is so spot on it’s scary. I’m quitting this month, for a startup. Going to take a month or so to de stress. You should too. Fuck this company
Yeah, fuck it! So pissed.
Not even lying dude, I’m out this month. I’ve seen so many people leave since I’ve been here. The culture, the people are extremely toxic. The pay is sub par. The wlb is okay, but I hate every single morning waking up and coming to work. Not worth it. Not worth your life. Start applying to jobs TODAY. You can LeetCode later. This company is full of incompetent managers and it goes all the way up. Unless you have a family then stay, otherwise bail the fuck out and I’m being dead serious
Everything is about levels here. Cuz a senior says so other juniors should just obey it!
But does your company debate over the most simplest basic stuff that every engineer should already know. Or are most topics more like architecture and in-depth stuff? The latter I'm ok with if there is more complexity to the problem.
It seems like the go to response is that “we’ve always done it this way.” And even if people agree on the inefficiency, there’s little to no movement by the people who actually have the authority to make it happen.
The most dangerous sentence in a company or for progress “we’ve always done it this way”
Correct, I hear that all the time. You have to push people via email and if they don't finish it in time you have to push it with your manager. Even things like installing software on your computer takes forever.
Yo OP just DM me
☝🏼don’t come here. It’s even worse. Check Glassdoor
I’m having this very struggle myself. They won’t shell out the money for good talent, and everyone who doesn’t suck leaves. I guess that means I suck. Big legacy companies sound all the same...
Use your job to practice LC
If it isn't toxic you should tolerate it while looking. I quit a job with nothing lined up because the boss was an ass and it was a lot of trouble (as politics show us though, spite is always worth it am I right? :D). GS has incompetence but it's tolerable, the TC just sucks. I would be okay with dealing with all the stupid architecture and horrible code if I were paid more. I'm LCing but not giving up my paycheck until I have something down in ink.
Just coast by and LC after work. That’s what I’m doing. I can’t just quit cause I’m H1B but I wouldn’t regardless because I rather take their money.
Toxic would be worse, but I feel you on that. Why I left my last job, even though the rumors seems kinda toxic at my current place.
