Quitting job to go full time interview

I know it goes against popular advice to do this, but I’m personally not happy and it’s somewhat affecting my health. I’ve secured onsites at multiple smaller startups and it’s such a hassle to schedule something without drawing too much attention. For those who did this, how did it workout for you? Question for recruiters: is it a red flag to you when someone quit their job to go full time looking?

Take leave of absence (unpaid) but don’t quit before you hatch

Do NOT do it. Even if you get an offer, the company will lowball you because you dont have a job. Even if you have multiple offers, they will lowball you because there is no frame of reference for you to give them and for them to agree to compare against.

Just take a couple of weeks unpaid off.

With God’s grace, some luck and a lot of hard work, I currently have 6 offers in hand from really well established companies and there are like 4 onsite lined up. I prepared for 2 months straight for interviews alongside working 8 hours a day at my job. I put 20 hours for all weekends in those two months and i also made sure to study 4 hours in the night during each week day.
So if you are determined, it is definitely doable. Watch some time management videos online, if you feel like u r bad at it. Good luck.

The low-ball comment is not true if you are unemployed, particularly if you expect multiple offers. The offers compete against each other. I was unemployed for several months and got 4 offers competing against each other. None were bottom of the range and all shifted up with notice of competing offers. Take the time off. Time to recharge is necessary. There is no reason to burn yourself out for the sake of a continuous employment record.

  • I also left. I couldn't stand the humiliation from my manager anymore. It was just too depressing to stay. I feel much better now. In hindsight I never should have taken that job to begin with.

  • Go ahead and go for it. If you hate your job so much why stay? Just quit and find a new one. Meanwhile enjoy the time off. Folks like you can find a job anywhere.

I did this. Had a glorious 6 weeks off studying and interviewing.

My new company didn't even know I'd left the old one.

How'd you manage to not let them know you'd left? Did they not ask "How do you like your job" "what are your job responsibilities" did you give white lies?

They ask questions like, 'tell us about this project'. No lies required.

Dont do that. Use your current position to leverage. You might feel it is hard at first but it is doable depending on how you organize your time

Yes. Accurate. You'll get a job anywhere you want but you might have to settle for suboptimal pay if they know you are 'between jobs' right now.

After you quit, Would you be happy when you can't get an offer for a year? Would you be desperate to take any offer even if it's not good?

Decide yourself. I felt the same when preparing for FANG. Still hate all those algorithms:) I forgot them after 12 years from University, had to remember everything and passed Google. Unfortunately no other company as time was really tight and stressful. I also have 2 kids:) However my husband was laid off from unsussesful startup, same education and forgetting everything. Prepared better, got 3 offers and have 50% higher TC:) However I can always try FB after a year at Google:)
