I am working as a analyst for linkedin. My background is not in tech (phD in chemistry). I moved from china to the us after my degree. here is my problem: I do not like my job, pay or my manager. I am doing meaningless work and get paid fairly bad. I got acceppeted into insights data science, which sounds like an interesting opportunity. should I quit my job for it? My friends tell me that I need to get knowledge and practise in python and java, maybe c++ to get good jobs. I learn fast, but at my current job is no time to breath, and I come home every day totally tiered. My manager blocks internal transferes and trainings, wo the option is not there. I interviewed at facebook and google, but failed the onside (python...). I do not want to waste more interviewes because I could only learn over the weekend.

Is this to risky? Does anybody know someone/ interviewed someone from insights data science who got a good job?

Joe: 2.5 years after phD

You should use another username. Don't use your real name on Blind (if it is..)

  • Insight DS is extremely prestigious - have heard that from multiple reliable sources. There are far worse ways to change your career. I’d say it’s even better than doing an MS in CS at a top-flight school, because it’s only a few months long. Plus they’re very connect with top firms in Bay Area + industry.

Yeah I was offered a position at insight but turned it down. Only their early batches got into FAANG. It seems like their later batches of students quite a lot get into tier 2 and startups (not unicorn).

^ Regarding your info/claim, not much statistics available on the internet. Even most reddit threads are kind of outdated..

OP is an analyst working in LinkedIn. Dude that's a data science project right there! Go track all the insight alumni..calculate the fraction that make it into tier 1 companies within 1 yr, as a function of cohort. Plot that vs time.

Btw there is a blog posts who analyzed this before and the results are good. But this was from many years at the beginning of insight

Sounds like a good project 👍 Prepare to find out some inconvenient truth and should present it first day at Insight...lol

    • I am not a graduate, my info comes from multiple sources, hiring managers, recruiters, alumni of the program. I’m talking about the DS program, FYI. Don’t know about the Data Engineering program.

Sorry OP. You have PhD, are in LinkedIn, which is better than MSFT and you wanna go insights boot camp? Wtf?

With LinkedIn on your resume you can go anywhere!

Easiest thing is to change your role/scope internally at LinkedIn to do what you want.

I have a similar background as yours. If you want to chat just PM.

Anyway I would say. Don't quit!!!

Ok OP so your mistep was to get into a business analytics/intelligence role.

If you cannot move laterally into more in demand and better roles like ML or AI or Engineering, and your manager is cuck blocking you, you may have to do insight.

The better way is to change your role to be less BI and more ML/AI/Engineering focus, then eventually switch titles.

Lateral move is blocked by my manager. I passed the data science loop here, but on hold because I need to get a recommendation from him. I am not on track of any promotion and don’t get interesting work or opportunities here. I ask for cooperation with engineering and the eng teams ask him, but his answer is that he needs me here and I need to brush up my skills in his team first.

Ok I'm guessing insight needs a response soon, can you delay acceptance?

The prob with insight is that you are technically unemployed, can't interview until month 3 and realistically if you get a job it'll be in month 6.

You can pass the DS interview internally so you are at least ok. You got LinkedIn in resume, so I think people will give you benefit of doubt (just look at all the responses here). It looks like you have a leetcode problem, you can fix that with time.

If you are weaker on the DS, insight will help you quickly do a project to get some visibility. If you are weaker on coding, I don't think insight will help that much vs you leetcoding all the way.

I'm still slightly in favor of not quitting cause once you do, people will ask questions. I suppose you can spin it as I want to branch out to DS and you want to work on other probs besides LinkedIn.

People can learn. That’s what op is trying to do. He grabbed simple job and he is trying to get into AI or ML. Some one in the above post said - op has PhD but still 120k salary? Not every science field might be good at CS. Just need more work to get the skills, and CS is a right field where everyone can learn and deliver

    • OP, just as hypothetical question, what if you resigned, then applied to LI DS? Not saying you should, but maybe DS org has an answer?

I am actually also joining Insight in fall (probably another city than u). As far as I know, insight program is very rush and not for learning from scratch. Instead, it helps you to finish a project in short time and polish it (+many other things).

In your case, I think it helps as you would have something to fill up your resume between jobs..

But honestly, most people have to leetcode if you want a job in software.. what kind of roles your interviewed at fb/Google?

Axtria : I will find out in a few months..You should open a new threads to ask your questions about Insight. I am interested to know the answers too.

OP: I guess you haven't passed the HC yet and they ask you to do team match first?

Personally, I feel like someone working at LI shouldn't have to go through Insight or any other boot camp. You're probably much better off just applying to DS positions at other tier1/tier2 companies.

Otoh if you don't want to be an SQL monkey then you probably want to transition more into Research Engineer roles in ML or something like that. Most of those require Leetcode prep. If I were you, I'd just bite the bullet and start prepping after work and/or on weekends. It got me out of a shitty job too.

I am not working in data science! I am working on BA stuff in a non tech org. My official title is not analyst. And yes it is f* true, 120 tc with that degree. By the way a colleague started this week, also phd and on the same level. And yes, bachelor get paid more when they are in tech orgs. The only good thing is LinkedIn on the resume, but that’s it

The question is do you really like the type of “data science” jobs they prepare you for. Figure out what you really like to do. It’s tough to quit and study full time but sometimes that’s the only way if you are serious about learning new things

I worked previously at apple with the same tc (a bit lower) also fulltime. I am still undecided. I tried to learn on weekends, but it turned out to be inefficient and after work I have not enough time. Maybe I should risk a pip and just learn...
