28 with around $180k net worth. Tired of incremental improvements in salary. Seriously considering moving out West and getting a FANG job and living 2-3 years out of a truck/RV so as to attain financial independence as fast as possible. Question for you — which campuses are RV friendly? I hear some people do it at Google in Mountain View, but what about other FANG companies like Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft, and Apple? TC $130k
You can leave your car in msft parking for long periods of time. Not sure an RV would fit in most of the garages or underground. I’d totally do this if I didn’t have dogs
Man you 28, go out, have some fun. Get a nice flat to invite girls in. Too early to think of financial independence.
Don’t listen. Get the FI. I wish I had started at your age
I have the nice flat now and the girls on rotation every month. Sex is definitely fun, but not worth extending my 8h of life everyday working for others for the next 10-20 years.
Following
You do know you can just hit the bell at the top of the app right?
But then you don't get fake internet points.
Plenty of RV-friendly parking on Amazon campus in Seattle.
Problem with Seattle might be the cold during the winter
This is a lie. There is barely parking for employees in Seattle. Also, you can only park RVs in industrial districts. It’s illegal to park on the streets.
Bro, first get a FANG job..these things are trivial
You’re right I’m working on this right now. Thinking of spacing out my interviews a month or two apart, so that if I do get rejected I have less time before I can reapply to a different FANG company. Also makes things less stressful to juggle several applications at once. On the other hand, I won’t have competing offers to use as leverage.
I recommend doing some burner practice interviews this way, but then line up all your fangs sequentially in the same week. It’s a long week but you’ll be an unstoppable offer generating machine by the end of the week. This is how I got 4 offers in one week.
RV is not good option imho. I worked for few in past. Get a 2 bed n rent out the other bedrm.
Why is the RV not a good option? I’m curious
Parking, Waste disposal, fresh water.lots of things. What you save in money, you waste in time and hassle.
Lol. Life is short. Don't optimize on the wrong things
I would argue this is optimizing for the right thing. If I can reach a net worth of $750k-1M in 3-4 years and not need to work for others ever again in my life, I think that would be pretty liberating.
Could you explain your thought process here? Liberating from what?
Agree with others. Get offers first. It's a huge effort involving multiple months of studying. Personality plays a factor also in FAANG interviews, some people are defensive or have poor mannerisms. Why do you believe you will reach 1 million net worth in 2-3 years. You would probably get hired as junior so 200k is most likely , after tax and benefits its more like 120k post tax. You have 180k now. Getting up to 300k takes grind through promotion. Assuming you are saving for a mill we are looking at 7 years assuming you dont spend money on anything. Its 1M enough? Assume you live to 90. That's 16k a year to live on. If you ask me, get a FAANG offer in Austin, work till you pay off your house (or house hack), and invest like a madman. 15-20 years sounds like a more reasonable timeline where you are not living on top ramen. Or here's another option. Work hard play hard. Grind your way up the corporate ladder. Get showered in rsus. Spend your money and invest. This is how I live. Nice house nice cars, 1.2m net worth to date and growing.
Thanks for the thorough answer. You gave me a lot to think about! Why do you think Austin is a good place to shoot for as opposed to California or Washington? Housing prices?
Yes only because housing prices.
I'm 23, have net worth of 130k plus earn 210k/year in TC. I would recommend you get a FAANG job/other super high paying job, live it up while you're young. The net worth will come quickly. I spend a lot, but still save ~100k/year(including 401k, etc.).
Wow you’re killing it man! Continue the hard work. Hope I make it there soon. Feel like I’m wasting time not racking in that high TC young when there’s still time for compounding
