Racism at GitHub normal?

Just had my onsite at GitHub for PM. I was flat out told I'd get a recommendation from one of the interviewers because the only other candidate remaining was "some white guy".

We're both POC so I guess she thought I was cool with it. I was actually shocked and disappointed. Is this kind of behavior normal or encouraged @ GitHub?

It’s pretty standard behavior in tech. Take advantage of to while you can I guess.

@GitHub Actually, discriminate means: making an unjust or prejudicial distinction in the treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, sex, or age.

By definition of the word discriminate, you CAN. So whoever taught you that you can't be racist against white, was racist against whites.

I'm starting to see why a place like GitHub would hire you.

Reminder for the peanut gallery that racism != prejudice != discrimination. They're not interchangeable terms.

Simplify it then. Simplify why you think being racist to whites is a nuanced and rationalized understanding of today’s socioeconomic landscape. You aren’t answering my question because you know you’re wrong, that you can’t explain your view point without being a racist

ah yes the classic “no ur wrong” response, the delight of racists everywhere. plz do some basic research before responding in the future, as responding to absolute idiots isn’t my idea of a fun time, though I am enjoying seeing you flailing about lmao

    • Why are you bringing gender into a conversation about racism? Stop acting like an expert on the subject when you can’t even decouple gender and race in your own mind

How is it "not possible" to be racist to white people. You are doing it right now, you aren't intelligible enough to notice? What is wrong with Americans?! I came from Idia and always heard white is racist. But seems to be the exact opposite in real life.

You must be new to the bay area. Quotas need to be filled. Racism in that direction is socially acceptable and is even encouraged.

The right type of diversity needs to be hired (don't be an Asian, Indian, or white guy basically). Extra Points if you are black or looking like a Mexican

Social trend of the day. It's mainly egoistically showing to the world that you are a good person. The person making those comments couldn't give more a fuck about you, they just know that by acting like that they will be seen as the cool guy on the block with the latest best socially acceptable comment

45% of people here believe racism is the norm at your company and only 12% of people believe the opposite. Seems like you’ve created a culture of exclusion and backed that up by your response. How about you check your own biases to understand why people associate GitHub with racism?

Well. I guess the poll speaks for itself. Most people either say yes or they don't know. The few racists here who clearly dislike white people voted no I think. Again I am from India so dont attack me for helping white person again. I'm not sure why everyone attacks white person.

instead of white person, you can just say white guys. because women are probably not targeted the same way. somehow, we have to pay the price for previous generations, oh well.

  • GitHub spcyckn
While that comment is wildly inappropriate, this entire thread is also ridiculous.

Went right into “white men are oppressed” territory. Come the fuck on. You aren’t paying for previous generations because white men are still 99% time the beneficiaries of biases like this. So yes, now we’re in a time and industry biased for minority hires after decades of being in one biased for white men that’s created this homogenous clusterfuck PR problem. Which is not just a PR/optics issues, there are actual cost to have employees that don’t represent or understand different perspectives.

“When you’re accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression”.

GitHub does want diversity and I think it’s pretty clear we actively try to achieve it like many other companies out there. I can’t speak for the interviewer and that position, but we do wipe all personal info (race, gender, etc) from applications for engineering for technical reviews and hiring committee evaluation.

You’re creating your own exclusionary monoculture based on skin color. Only 12% here think racism is not normal at GitHub at your colleague above told me to “stay the fuck away” if I don’t agree with the social justice culture. Hiring people based on skin color is wrong. GitHub for years has shown they fully endorse that. So go ahead and enjoy your reputation for racism that you’ve built for yourselves.

My post wasn’t about justifying what happened to the poster or at GitHub, I never endorsed what we are doing or not doing, I stated what the public facing goal of the company is what some things that are done internally.

My main point was about “white male oppression” as foundation less and completely lacking understanding of history and other perspective.

GitHub can be wrong. The response on here can also be wrong. Never mind the other immediately racist responses about avoiding places filled with Chinese and Indians.

You’re reduction is also ridiculous, if we were hiring literally based on color of skin and nothing else we would be way more diverse than we are, which is not that much still. If our monoculture is one that considers and seeks out diversity in race, gender, socioeconomic status, age, sexual orientation, and all the other facets of diversity that is not just race then I’m good with that and I joined for that reason as a minority. You can choose to work at a “color blind” place which is often worse than passive bias.

Regardless, an open poll on Blind where anyone can vote not just you know actually GitHub employees isn’t exactly scientific. I can also make an arbitrary poll about Microsoft and anyone decide what is and isn’t true. And we’re just gonna ignore most people who said “I don’t know”? Because, some people can be logical enough to understand they don’t actually know enough to form an opinion about a company they don’t work at? But if you’re completely fine with basing your opinion on random folks not even from the company as opposed to someone who works there then go for it, there’s nothing really I can say. If by promoting diversity and acknowledging race publicly means GitHub “fully endorses racism” I guess we do.
