Got nothing to do over Christmas. Was thinking of driving off to Crater lake by myself and hiking alone. Good idea? I know it's super cold. But part of the appeal is to experience the fierceness and unpredictability of nature. So am looking for feedback mostly about safety and good places to go to at this time of the year. Female/33/ SF Bay area
Long trip and potentially dangerous depending on weather, but the payoff of nature's beauty is worth the risk. Let family and friends know you'll be out there just in case.
Last year I went snow hiking in El Dorado national Forest and wasn't contactable for 48 hours. Family was super worried. Thinking of not informing anyone this time
Any idea what hikes I should do?
You should be good but you may want to stop by somewhere and pick up a taser gun or bear mace. For wild animals and/or engineers.
Good idea. Are there bears over there? I might keep to allowed trails outside of dawn and dusk times
Not sure I would drive the entire way if I could fly partway. Tire chains and four wheel drive may be advised. Also, check the National Park page for weather/road updates... sometimes they close off part of the park due to inclement weather.
It's kind of equidistant from Seattle and SF. Maybe closer to PDX ?
If you go,rent a satellite phone just in case you get into a jam and you can't get cellular service. https://www.mobal.com/satellite-phone-rental/
Hiking alone in the winter time is very dangerous, even for experienced hikers I've done it a few times and have had near misses on even easier trails. There's a volunteer search and rescue organization near me and the winter is the biggest source of calls due to inexperienced hikers. If you must go go on a hike you've done before that you can easily accomplish in the summer. Let someone know when you expect to be back so they can call emergency services if something bad happens.
Thinking I should change destination to death valley. Last year I went to the eldorado forest near Tahoe, but I guess this is higher in latitude.
y not go death valley instead? it will be relatively less colder ⛅ and more sunnier 🌞
I'm thinking of this
Crater lake will have a lot of snow... There is snow even in summer. You shouldn't go if you don't know what to expect
