Real Prestige

is not grinding hundreds of college-level Leetcode exercises to finally "crack" a coding interview and become among thousands of career optimizers boastful of outearning factory wage workers by employment at some "big N" fancy acronym:
Facebook
Amazon
Apple
Netflix
Google
Microsoft
LinkedIn
Airbnb
Lyft
Uber
Dropbox

but rather,

being recognized across the industry for your contributions, by a personal name such that companies' public reputations rest upon having the honor to hire you, who live only in passionate pursuit of a beautiful idea:
Brian Kernighan
Dennis Ritchie
Donald Knuth
Geoffrey Hinton
Jeff Dean
Ken Thompson
Leslie Lamport
Linus Torvalds
Richard Stallman
Sanjay Ghemawat
Tim Berners-Lee

  • Google can start by getting rid of LC style questions and ask domain specific ones. Lead by example.

I believe Google and other FAANG want to find people ready to do mindless tasks such as studying for leetcode interview. It's a self selecting thing. They want cogs that execute without asking too many questions. They don't want the "think out of the box" type of engineers anymore that they needed when they were still a prestigious startup

Are you saying they asked different questions when they were smaller? I haven't heard that and see LC style interviews in current day prestigious startups as well.

Not my experience in all startups. A lot of them do real life coding exercises, or pair programming for an afternoon or discussion around what the guys used to work on etc etc

Google engineers do not know what is available outside. They cannot evaluate or comprehend certain domain specific answers.

Correct. Dean and Ghemawat literally saved Google in 2000 when their algorithm stopped working, and no one could figure out why. Dean and Ghemawat figured out it was a hardware problem and created the foundation of Google's rise. At Google they are revered as deity, and even Sundar defers to them.

Any idea if Google will move soon to the format suggested by ByteBoard that Google's Area 120 is punting. Is it not hypocritical that Google would try to get other companies to use tools like Byteboard but itself continue to use the LC format?

Are you willing to die on that hill? I'd imagine that you're the type to look down on an "optimizer" that's more successful than you > actually pursuing a beautiful idea like all of the white men (except for my boy Sanjay) that you've just mentioned. Most of these guys end up at big companies or research institutes anyway, so this is backward thinking.

I agree that is an ultimate form of prestige/accomplishment. Don't think anyone would deny that.

But on average AND NOT EVERY INDIVIDUAL CASE, working at Google or Facebook is definitely more accomplished than a no name company.
