Got a call from G recruiter for a HW position. I'm thinking about pursuing but kinda scared because of all these talks about a recession around the corner. Is it a good idea to switch jobs now? Will HW folks be the first ones on the chopping block in FANG when shit hits the fan?
When people fear recession, market rallies. When people celebrate, thats when recession happens. I dont think you should be basing your decision on it. Think about your career.
Google has add revenue that can drive them a recession, probably more safe than anywhere else, sans Facebook. But of course Google and Hardware could always split, since they seem to not yet be serious
G has two main HW teams Consumer HW - Pixel/Chromebook Technical Infra - Supporting Cloud and Infra for Maps/Ads Technical Infra ia quite stable, Also the fact that they did not lay-off(per my knowledge) anyone when they shut Fi makes me trust G
99.9% of Google's revenue is from ad sales, and that shit is super sensitive to an economic slowdown. That's why Google's stock is so cheap (EBITA multiple). FB will have the same problem. Most ot Silicon Valley is now somehow linked to ad spend. Good luck.
Grab recession by the balls and switch. Yolo
That's the spirit.
I also have the same concern. Since FB and G are core software companies will they try to keep their SW engineer and let go of HW engineer? Will they think HW team can be formed again if needed?
Google would be safer than NV. Although I don't think Jenson likes layoffs. He likes to give company wide paycuts instead
Rest of the Google, yes. But I don't think it'd be true for HW orgs as they aren't really making any money and are probably still a "hobby".
I would say depends on which HW team in google. TPU team is making money for them, i think.
