Hi, I am moving to the bay area for work. I have been living in Texas and this is the first time I would live in California. My office is in downtown San Francisco near the South Beach area. I am not sure where I should start looking for housing. Some of my friends are living in mountain view and San Jose. Pros to living in mountain view: - have some friends living there Cons: - cost probably the same as San Francisco - 2 hr round trip to work - time and money for transportation - not as cool as living in San Francisco Which areas should I look at if I want to save money and time for living not too far from work? What would you say would the average rent be if I want my own room in a flat. I am an Indian and would prefer to live in a neighborhood with more Indians around. Any advice would be a great help. Thanks!
Parkmerced....join the IGA-sfsu student group on facebook or sfsu roommate...few indians
It's not 2 hrs round-trip to work btw. It's more like 3-4hrs round-trip to work. If caltrain has some trouble, then it can go up to 5 hours in commute.
True
Oh didnt see you were indian and wanted indians around you..Welcome to Fremont, CA my friend. That's where you need to look
This guy ^
Why is it OK for an Indian to say "I prefer to live around other Indians" but not for white person to say "I prefer to live around other white people"? Double standard.
It's a nationality, not a race. When I said I would like to live closer to indians, that is just for a sense of community. Also, living close to an Indian community means that I can have easy access to Indian groceries and other stuff specific to India which won't be easily available elsewhere.
Bring your boots
Fremont or desivale....err...sunnyvale
To rent or buy? Either way the commute will be painful if you end up living anywhere south of San Mateo. That’s a 2hr round trip right there. Moving from out of state you’re probably used to driving therefore underestimate the wheel time required in Bay Area. It’s often a PARKING LOT! My recommendation is to stay as close to the office as possible.
Living in SJ and working in SF is a disaster. Check out the burlingame/milbrae area..you're not really going to find anything "cheap" though if that's what you're after. Across the bridge in Oakland, Alameda, Berkeley may be worth it too.
Also Emeryville. I’ve been there for four years and it’s much better than Oakland and very close to the city plus multiple options to travel to city in less than 30 mins during peak hours
