Redmond vs Toronto

I have 2 offers :

Microsoft Azure,
Redmond, USA
SDE 2, L62,

Okta, Toronto, Canada
Staff Software Engineer,

Where can I have more career growth potential?
Pros/Cons of living in Toronto vs Redmond.

Is it wise to work in Toronto for 4 years, get the citizenship and move to US? What are the pros/cons of this Canadian citizenship route?

  • Canada route seems to be a better option, both TC and potential to work in the US later.

The cons is Toronto is cold af.

    Microsoft. Clear choice.

Always choose greedy algorithm with respect to US immigration. Don't plan 4 years ahead, you don't know what the laws will be then. Just move to Azure Redmond right now and gain one of the best credentials you can have globally!

It hurts when Microsoft pays only 40k in shares which has grown to 80k now. Even if I get promoted I may get another 80k extra. But then, I'll still be getting less that what Okta is offering right?

Arey bhai, agar tu yahaan tak pahuncha, toh already tum job me phod rahe ho... Aaja yaar, continue your good work, opportunities aur paisa apne aap aajayenge.

Maybe you become principal in the next 5-6 years, maybe you get a H1B to G/FB, maybe you get SSAs that match your Okta offer, maybe apna AAD waale Okta'ko maarenge, maybe you have a not so nice manager at Okta, maybe upcoming recession me Okta ka stock 20% giregi, bhai life me kuch bhi ho sakta hai. Solve for continuing success in the scenario with maximum known variables.

You can also get Canadian citizenship in about 4 years, and can come work in the US anytime easily on TN. Getting that salary in Canada, especially Toronto is superb imo, I'd trade living in the us for it. Don't worry about weather, you get used to it just fine (People choose to live in New York even though it has very shitty weather). Toronto itself is one of the most diverse cities in the world too.

    Toronto. Okta. No question.

Microsoft will probably buy okta at some point.

Depends how old are you! If you are up for an adventure, go to Redmond. If you want a good stable life, go to Canada.

I would suggest Toronto. The US is brutal on getting Indians green cards. If you move to Toronto you will have a nice life. The people there are really welcoming :)

Go to Toronto, get your PR in Canada. The pay is much better too, stay there, collect your vest, get your PR then apply for a US company.

With OP’s tech background + points for job offer, s/he easily qualifies for express entry

Passport is 4-5 years away. 3 years residency + 1 year passport application process + 3 months to get passport.

As someone who lived in both places I would strongly suggest Microsoft .The career opportunities in the US are way way way better than Canada. This should be the only deciding factor .
If you do want to immigrate for the long term however choose Canada.
BTW for that TC in Canada you can live like an emperor.

Toronto, many Indians here are contemplating a move to Canada. Usually the difference in money is the obstacle, but you already have a good offer. Once you come to US, settle down, have kids, another move becomes less likely. You’ll be at the mercy of changing immigration laws, no stability. Layoffs are more common in US than India, it will be a hanging dagger at all times

Edit: to non Indian passport holders - US all the way

It’s still better to be getting 200k base for 3 years w/o a promo, than promoting every year to those numbers starting with a 150k base.
Not even to mention the initial stock grant and refreshes.
