Referrals: What is the recruitment process?

Question

I understand why the referral is important but can someone tell me what are the recruitment steps, compared to the traditional way (without referral) to the companies below? 
Do you jump steps? Is the process done faster?

I am interested to learn more about the recruitment process - WITH REFERRAL - to 
1. Google
2. Amazon
3. Facebook 
4. Expedia
5. Apple

Same thing except you fail at the phone screen instead of the resume screen

You have a better chance to get your application reviewed by a recruiter. At some places if you have the right experience, with a referral you're pretty much guaranteed an interview

Applied with referral to Microsoft and Google. Didn’t even get a phone screen with recruiter
