FB, GOOG, AAPL have the best refreshers. What are the other companies that have good refreshers that match on-hire grants.

Zillow has a decent refresher. MS is terrible. How is Dropbox, Uber, Salesforce, AMZN, Snap, et al.

    Where there is little WLB, you will get refreshes. Even in companies which don’t have refreshes, if you work hard you will get refreshes.

      I interviewed once at a company and my interviewer was ex-googler. When asked why he left G, he mentioned really bad wlb. I was surprised to hear that. So it seems it is not good everywhere. Btw, two of my interviewers that day were former googlers.

      I do not understand the financial sense at those companies with poor refresh. The cost of replacement of those who leave after expiry >> cost of lateral hire + biz disruption. Why not refresh better?

      It's the cost of replacement times the probability that people will leave. Wrt a purely comp-based model, people have a bias towards staying where they are, for both rational and irrational reasons

    At Two Sigma instead of RSU you get a cash bonus and for anyone meeting expectations it goes up every year. So no 4 year cliff.

      Yeah, I think the interview bar can be high. Generally the candidate needs someone to be excited about hiring them to get hired and if everyone is lukewarm they probably won’t get hired.

      It varies by team. Java is the most widely used programming language. But there’s a lot of non-Java stuff now too. In interviews people tend to use Python and Java, and if you know Java you might get some Java specific questions.

    • nSxV23 - Varies for every role, level, and location. So an IC2 SWE in Seattle is going to be different than an IC4 SRE in San Francisco.

    • yt216z32 - Not in practice because what is market rate (and therefore what an external candidate would get) isn’t static and has been going up a lot over the past few years. If things were static, then yes.

      Depends on ur level but usually level 25 if ur performing well is anywhere 30-60k - it compounds year after year
      More than enough CTAs go around that is anywhere 100k +

      I'm okay to tradeoff off a little WLB for a better refresh. Do not have to look for a jump when my on-hire runs out of steam.

      The tradeoff would drive efficiencies to partially pay for the better refresh
