Refusing to take a demotion offer at Google?

Google offer as a level 1 PM, and based off pay scale it seems like a demotion. And offer TC is like... 20% down, though I am a high performer at my current company (Salesforce). I have a refresher/equity history to prove it, and on track for a second promotion in 12 months.

Level-wise, they said my hiring feedback was excellent but they want me to show at least a few successes before "leveling up." Meanwhile, I feel like I'm above even the next level and my LinkedIn/resume proves it.

Compensation wise, I thought my TC would go up at least 20% moving to *~ Google ~* but taking a 20% pay hit is not worth it just to have a name on my resume. However, I am really interested in the team since it seems like an excellent opportunity for career growth.. so I might just show them what I make now and hope they'll at least give me 10%.

With a low YOE, as a program manager do I just have to just build up a few more years on my record before another company comes in with an actual competitive offer?

TC: 230
YOE: 2

Why mess with something that's going great? You have 0 guarantee that you'll get a supportive boss or an area to shine when moving, plus you start on the wrong foot. When job changing you normally go higher: level and comp.

This is great advice. If you are happy where you are then don't just go by brand name. You can apply again after few months. I joined Google with less TC thinking that i can prove myself and get promoted quick but my boss is not supportive. Also getting promoted depends on many factors.

I see from some posts that google promotions can be slow, but I do not have first hand experience.

@vdks, do you see it generally slow to grow or is it specific to your manager?
With the competition to get into google, is there more competition to promote?

I don't mean promotion is slow. It takes it's own time, which makes sense once you get in. It takes time to understand internal tools and infrastructure and get accustomed to all products and process. And then managers support will come into play.

You work at salesforce you can’t be picky.

This is a definite level up in your career, I would switch regardless of 20% drop in TC

Don't let Google spoil what you've got. You seem to be having a good time at Salesforce which is also an amazing company. When Google shows you they value you enough to offer what you deserve, you can move if it's what you want at the time.

Don't let then screw you with brand name.

Salesforce is not an amazing company. It’s like tier 3 or tier 4.

Google will open a lot more doors down the line than salesforce, that’s for sure

Fuck Apple. I worked in Apple for 5 years and moved to Salesforce. I am living the life now. Maybe I am missing those yearly refreshes here, but it’s 1000% better than the filthy Apple.

Personally I say tier 2 at worse, but whatever. The culture is great. Communication is very open for the most part. And the benefits are very good. It is an amazing company to me. I wouldn’t move to google for a pay cut.

I didn’t say it was tier 1 at best. Just saying it’s not worse than tier 2. Also whatever is referring to these tiers, which are subjective. Main point is I think Salesforce is a good company; one worthy of staying at versus a low ball offer.

What will get by this move. Screw them.

Salesforce is as good as Google. By working in something good, you will get a higher pay in the end. You are getting that right now.

😆Everyone saying to go to Google is not in Google. The grass is always greener.
Google can be great, but if happy with current job and take a pay cut. I would not go for a pay cut. That would feel like paying Google to work for them.

I heard Salesforce is heaven...it was rated #1 a couple years ago as the best place to work. I know Google has a nice reputation but...I know Salesforce is just really well reputed for its culture.

Why people interview at Google without competing offers in-hand (or in the works) boggles me.

Google will lowball unless you have a competing offer. Many companies will. Always create a competitive bid environment, people.

Offer must be valid for some time, get competing offers till it expires? IMO don't reduce TC for "brand"

Hard to believe you were offered $184 TC... When you say PM, do you mean Program Manager or Product Manager? Two totally diff things and pay scales...

It seems like your manager likes you right now at salesforce. I wouldn’t take the lowball. You are not guaranteed a good team and that big of a paycut is not worth the change and extra work to ramp up. Salesforce is still growing 25% yoy. If you really want the google job tell them the package is way too low and just say you are willing to stay at salesforce. See if they budge or not. It seems like you are a young woman and you have not negotiated. Reiterate your value and don’t just take the first shitty offer. Also DONT SHOW THEM what you are paid. Tell them what you want and add a bit to it. If you want a 20% bump then take your salesforce package and multiply it by 130%. They won’t rescind the offer if you ask.

Based on what others mentioned, Google intentionally lowballs because they know they are a name brand

So you‘re paying for the name brand with 20% of.your TC
