Hey folks. About three weeks ago I received offers from Nordstrom and Oracle SDE 1 level for both. I was set on Oracle because I thought the cloud experience would be really cool but there were some red flags that led me to take Nordstrom. Either way they're both a tough sell. Oracle cloud is not as good as AWS or Azure and retail is a tough market. However I'm thinking that maybe I should have taken Oracle instead. The Oracle director for that team I would have joined said the offer stands for a few months so I can join if I dont like the new place but I dont want to look like a complete jerk quitting Nordstrom in the first few months. Tbh I dont really know that I even like software development but this job is what allows me to live the life I have so I feel like I need to stop acting like a whiny brat and suck it up. Anyway I guess I'm not even looking for advice just venting. But I would appreciate it regardless. Sorry folks. Just feeling a little down.
If you want to go to Oracle, why not reneg Nordstrom before you start after accepting Oracle (based on the director saying you’d have a spot for months - confirm before, of course)?
Quit Nordstrom. That’s BS anyways !
I forgot to mention. I worked at my first job straight outta college for 3 months then I joined another company. No hard feelings
Only you yourself is in charge of your own happiness. That being said, you have to figure out if you have your FOMO goggles on or not, because that can cloud (no pun intended) your judgement. You might think Oracle was the one, then switch over, then find out it’s completely crap. From a TC perspective, Oracle obviously looks better. From a WLB, you need to discern which one is better. The way I see it, I would go to Oracle and learn about their cloud, then down the road apply for an AWS gig and leverage what you know about their competitor’s product into your group. Companies LOVE poaching off each other, and the candidate who has experience working in different infrastructure is so unique and invaluable.
Question. Why do you care if Nordstrom people think you are a jerk or not? Job quitting is a normal thing. Take the Oracle offer while you still have it. Otherwise you are being a jerk to yourself.
Go with Oracle... At least that's what I would do from my perspective. Why stay at Nordstrom?
Nordstrom sucks from customer perspective. Ordered many items on their “black Friday” sale, website crashed many times and almost all orders that I bought with discount were cancelled because they can’t fulfill it. WTF?
TC of both offers? And what's your yoe
1 yoe Nord - $143k Oracle - $152k
There have been people that changed their mind after signing an offer. I actually know someone that did that. They went to work the first day and explained that they would go to another company instead. Awkward, intimidating, sure but people have done it before and life goes on. Also the grass is greener on the other side and 2 years from now it won't matter much which one you chose if you want to move into FAANG etc Successful people don't make the right decisions. They make their decisions right. Pick one and make the most of it. Don't play that what if bullsht
