Help my frend to ask a question, since he does not have an account. He wants to apply academia job, but offers from academia are around March every year. Recently he got an offer from Amazon. The deadline is soon and they won’t extend it. He would like to know what will happen if he accepts Amazon offer first, and then reject it if he gets an offer from academia. There is around four months between now and then. He graduates next year and this means he cannot work for Amazon first and then quit for the academia job. I told him it would be pretty bad for the team he has matched. But actually I don’t know what will happen exactly. Wha do you guys think? Thank you.
What this guy said. So long as he doesn't take any money, telling a potential employer no after telling them yes is really just a bad move relationship-wise. Food for thought: If business conditions at Amazon changed, they would not think twice about pulling that offer.
He has to think about himself first. If academia doesn't work out and he hadn't taken Amazon role hes left with nothing. Better try sit on both chairs for now until things are clearer
Worst-case is Amazon will mark him as rehire ineligible. I don’t know if that’s actually the case. So probably don’t do it if his heart is set on Amazon specifically. It’s not like it will ruin his career; he could just go to any of the other FAANGs for example.
Amazon offer, if accepted, is "valid" for 1 year. If you reject after, they will not blacklist you. Just keep it civil with the hiring manager, and in event you will decide to join Amazon during the year, your hiring manager may accept you back with no interviews
Think of this as a relationship. Do you think it's a good idea to get into one knowing you're just waiting for something else? Granted if he's got bonuses, he'll be required to pay all of that back in all likelihood.
