I had recently applied for Microsoft for one of their SDE roles through a referral, and a recruiter had contacted me for further steps. As, this was the usual procedure, I did not worry too much about it. She asked all the usual questions and then told she would get back to me with the online assessment link for me to finish. She told, I would be getting it by next day. Two days later and no response. I followed up, she then told me, since I have only one more attempt for H1B (OPT until 2021 feb), as per Microsoft's policy, they won't be proceeding with my application ! :( I feel so shitty when i think about my situation.
Apply for companies that are hiring in Canada or Europe. Many unicorns hiring - snowflake in Berlin, databricks in Amsterdam, Airbnb in France. This assumes you’re good enough to get into them though
I am planning to keep that as a plan B. I have already started preparing for Google/Fb in 6 more months. I had applied to around 150-200 jobs in Europe just for the fun of it, and i did not get callbacks. My guess is, I should get into a company which has geographically distributed and then move internally. I am thinking, messaging recruiters internationally won't work, because why would they consider an international candidate, if they can get local talent. Any other suggestions?
Because there is no useful local talent at the rate they are hiring? I’ve seen the same databricks spam on LinkedIn for 6 months. Maybe they aren’t calling you back because your resume is bad?
Feel sorry for you man.
I was hired recently. Opt expires in June 20
Is it likely that you are eligible for STEM opt?
Wow! I had applied to Google, Yahoo, FB and Walmart, and none of these companies brought up that issue at all. I got rejected in Yahoo's phone screen, but went onsite for the other 3 companies. Expecting an offer from Walmart. I just did not expect this from Microsoft. :/
Good thing they didn't rescind the offer afterwards, and you got dismissed early on.
Lol. Haha, None of the other companies I had interviewed with had brought up such an issue. I just didn't expect this from MS.
MS immigration is pretty messed up now. Such immigration concerns were also raised during our recent townhall QnA.
Move to Canada and ask to work remote in MS Canada. Immigration to Canada is simpler. PM me if you need to.
Thanks. Pm'ing you. :)
Is Ericsson not filing?
Lol I know people who just told the HR they have several more years of OPT, and by the time it came to offer stage, noone worried about it
You would feel lucky they don’t proceed further. Microsoft has the shittest perm policy in the universe. If you join, they may wait till your opt about to be expired and until then start your perm process. Putting your life and career in jeopardize. Walk away now and other companies are much better than this shit hole.
Shit, that's terrible! I thought once h1b got approved, they would start gc process. Didn't know it was this bad.
Do other companies also have such policies?
