Rejected from FACEBOOK for not having a H1b

I recently gave a technical interview for Data Specialist, Product Support Operations role at Facebook and I can say that they liked me a lot as I received an update within an hour that they want to schedule an onsite. But here’s the tricky part. They said that I need to provide a proof of my employment eligibility(EAD) before they could schedule an onsite.

I am currently on STEM OPT extension which is valid for a year and half. I provided them with a copy of my EAD and to my surprise, the recruiter called and told me that they couldn’t move forward as the immigration team said that they couldn’t support to hire me at this point and did not even specify a reason.

Did something like this happen to anyone else?

It’s extremely difficult for even the top companies (w/ infinite resources) to obtain H1B Visa’s. You can thank Donald

No Donald has [rightfully so] made it more difficult. The success rate of H1B petitions has dropped significantly since his election. (Sorry I’m not sorry). And if you’re Chinese, multiply difficulty by 2x.

"Rightfully so"? Interesting? I want to know, how are H1B employees bad for the country? Pay taxes, get no govt. benefits, rarely cause trouble in the society (haven't looked up stats, just based on the folks I've met).

Rightfully, so that “Docker” can get a FAANG job and say “I’m a self made man, just needed to level the field first”. That’s...not how it will pan out, spoiler alert.

For people who are commenting on what has changed, H1b transfer rejections are higher than they have even been. USCIS is hell bent on making life miserable for everyone 🙁

@Bloomberg: please check statistics of H1b rfes/denials. Absolutely it’s just an excuse to mindlessly torment applicants

So? There are a lot of sham H1Bs working for sham Indian consultancies, so the numbers going up means nothing for real H1B holders, I transferred under the current admin, no issues ...

Bloomberg: it’s like you’re saying my kids school didn’t get shot up, so Sandy hook must be a hoax. The world is bigger than just what you experience you know. Read up on the topic before declaring your view. Or you know, you can just throw off the mask of rationality and straight away say “America/ROW first, go home immigrants from India”- at least no one would bother engaging you then.

I live in a 1 bedroom condo (650 sqft) in downtown Toronto that I bought for 600k. The monthly operating expenses are 550 in condo fee, 200 in property tax and 50 in insurance, so my housing-related cash flow would be -2900/mo if you include the mortgage payment of 2100.

The going rate on the rental market for the above said unit would probably be 2300-2500/mo.

Used to lease a 500 sqft apartment with a roommate and it was about 750 per month per person. That was thanks to rent control and the fact I signed the lease about half a decade ago and never moved. Now it would be 1000 if you get the lease from scratch.

For single persons, even if you eat out every meal, factor in occasional fun + savings for vacations, don't own a car (kinda unnecessary for downtown Toronto), $2000 in non-housing expenses are plenty. If you're extremely frugal $1000 is doable too. I don't know how it's like in Seattle.

Overall I find it pretty doable to save 50% of post-tax income in Toronto for a single person. My historical peak was at 70% but was leasing a crappy apartment, however at an equivalently crappy TC (110k)...I guess folks in Seattle can do much better, but correct me if I'm wrong.

For folks stuck in H1B / pre H1B limbo - they aren't thinking of buying property. Or doing anything for that matter outside work.

There is more to wealth building / life than a simple TC.

How much would you value freedom?

Yea, you're total right Google. The grass is always greener and you want what you don't have without thinking too much about what you already have.

I guess for folks in the H1B/GC limbo, it's more nerve wracking to change job as well, which might hurt long term TC progression, so this may be something to consider.

Yeah sounds like you have a good thing going. How much do you pay for health insurance ?
      Nov 18
    • Amazon / Eng BFI4
In Ontario (where Toronto is in) you pay 0 to get basic coverage called OHIP (no dental, vision or drugs). Amazon provides this enhanced coverage that fills in the gap.

I heard in British Columbia (wjere Vancouver is in) there is some public insurance premium that you have to pay, but I'll need to verify with my friend on how much.

I had the similar situation. Interviewing for E5 SDE at FB. Gave telephonic interview last month and recruiter invited me for onsite interviews. After filling the form, recruiter said it’s against their policies as I only have about 19 months left on my STEM extension with 2 H-1B tries. So I joined Amazon. Microsoft and Amazon would not care about it. I know because my other offers were from Microsoft, Apple and Zillow.

With 1.5 year length from now means you may only have 1 chance for lottery. Even though u have 2 chances, you cannot work from April to October.

I actually have 2 chances at applying for H1b. My visa is valid until June. But, yes I wouldn’t be able to work until October.
      Nov 18
    • You can! You will get cap gap extension, if your H1 application is picked in lottery.

Yes! Similar to that I am currently on H1b and a recruiter(job match-maker as she wrote on her profile) found me on LinkedIn and persuaded me for a position which clearly listed a US person because of federal data. I noted that to her but she thought I was good fit for company and is an established growing startup I may be fit for other role.
Everything went smooth, HR screen, technical resume screen and then a day before technical with VP they told me they can’t offer sponsorship at this point.
