Asking for a friend. He interviewed onsite and was rejected - I think he didn’t even make it to HC. However the recruiter said the hiring manager still liked him and offered him contractor position. What does that mean / should he take it and be a second class citizen at Google? My thought is no fuck that, only go as FTE. Contractors are treated like outsiders and he can do better than that. Thoughts?
Hmm I wish I was a contractor, so much tax write off.
Normally i wouldn’t take a contractor position just because of stability concerns & having to go through job search and interviews again. But if the pay is good and your friend is desperate (desperate to leave current company due to a myriad of reasons, i.e. pay, commute, culture), then he should just take it and 1. continue interviewing without rescinding his apps and 2. try to get full-time offer after. It does suck to be a contractor but hey at least it’s Google lol
Keep in mind a lot of Google contractors are segregated from full-time Googlers. We have specific offices in San Jose where we put the contractors. No free food in those buildings from what I’ve heard.
I did not know that. Hm, that is a bit demoralizing..
May working as a contractor for Google somehow invalidate him as an FTE candidate in the future, because of some legal stuff? Just a thought, don't know much about such stuff.
On the contrary, I know of some who have successfully made the switch from TVC to FTE.
I worked as a contractor there for sometime, it's complete downgrading of your skills. Experience was bad and left within few months. Won't suggest anybody.
So you don’t work at Google anymore? Why does your company say Google in your username?
I thought that is previous company
McKinsey, I would not recommend that your friend take the contractor roll at all. Read this other thread on how Google treats its contractors: Check out this post! "Inside Google’s shadow workforce (Misc.)" https://us.teamblind.com/s/0EtLb7wQ
Wow, that article is scarily accurate. Except the badge color for TVCs is red only. Green badges are for interns.
Contractor at Google is the worst if you have other fte options.
He has three other offers, and is a very strong performer. I find it a tad insulting that google offers him a second class position instead.
My team at Facebook has hired folks as contractors when we didn’t have official HC or something. As far as I can tell they’re treated the same - the team insists on it. It will depend on the manager and team at Google too.
I would consider this only if that gives you the real contractors benefits such us ability to work from home, be flexible on working hours and was 1099 so you can nicely minimize your taxes.
Unfortunately that’s not how it works with Google and all the big companies. They use these middleman body shops like adecco and adecco makes you a W-2 employee of theirs to minimize legal liabilities with regards to payroll taxes.
Then screw it. It’s immoral.
Used to work at contractor at G. FT outside is better. Some ppl I know successful switch to FT but it is rare. I sticked around for a couple years, my rate was high. Does your friend have other option?
What was your rate at google as a contractor? Third party staffing company not willing to pay more than 100$/hr
+1 to second class citizen.
