Has anyone done this? Feels bad. But is more logical. 😞

About to reject Google, for an offer from Microsoft. Better role at Microsoft, getting ML/AI work.

Overall TC better at MSFT when considering COL.

    Yeah I rejected them once!

Few seconds later I realized it was a mistake.

Another few seconds later I realized it was a dream!

I mean, I really enjoy writing code, making money and having a work life balance. Being a SWE gives me all three, so why shouldn’t it be a dream? Sometimes I find it hard to believe that people are willing to pay $ for me to code. Even if I was magically financially independent tomorrow, I’d still be coding something up in my free time.

Do dreams just have to be cliched stuff like traveling the world (done it, totally overrated), charity? (I donate to stuff but doesn’t really give me as much pleasure as people claim. Sometimes think people just want to be show offy about their charity and no one really can feel amazing just by donating $ to a cause but whatever)

Don’t generalize; my colleague did exactly that and going by his role in MS, I think he is much happier there. Yes, Google is the best paying employer but not every role is interesting!

I rejected them too. You can always change your mind later since they always seem to be growing.

Apparently they have a recruiting team dedicated to folks who rejected them...I’ve received a call checking-in almost every year on the day since.

This is true. Those recruiters are assigned to you specifically and are role/team/office agnostic (as opposed to the normal recruiters who specialize), so you can pretty much tell them what you want to do and they'll go ahead and make the appropriate arrangements. Also, many G offers are actually valid for 6-12 months in case you change your mind.

No idea, but having rejected an offer will probably help your future chances (they know you cleared the bar at one time and would have additional experience)

I can’t even get Microsoft to arrange any on-sites. Yet I was recently on-site at Google. Google is much easier to get into than Microsoft. I now see why some call it MicroShaft: to get hired you need to personally attract a needle-dicked manager and service him thoroughly.

My colleague opted for Microsoft over Google around 7-8 months back. Microsoft role is more aligned to his research background in machine learning plus they matched Google’s offer (base, RSUs).

    • Apple Icml2017
That’s true and I had the exact same discussion with my colleague. He was saying he is thinking this for 3-4 year timeframe; so the effect of refresher RSUs won’t be huge in 3 years.

Do what is right for you. I wish I waited a year to join Google. I took less money and joined a team I wasn’t excited about because of the Google brand. Wait a year to get what you want.

If it’s within 12 months of offer, then no. If it goes beyond the 12 months it’s case by case per candidate ie applying for same level, role, gained experience, etc.

Passed on Google here too. Nothing magic about Google. If Amazon is willing to pay me more and give me a better role, so be it. When Google is willingness to give me an upleveled role from where I am now, with higher comp and more scope, I am ready to talk. Amazon has been great for my career progression though and that role at Google was an obvious dead end.
    Dec 10, 2018 4
    • Microsoft do_needful
Why? What did they offer you at Google that was an obvious dead end for you?
      Dec 10, 2018
    • Amazon Northman
At Amazon I had a 30+ person team (now larger), rapidly increasing headcount, ownership of multiple major programs and a clear path to further promo. At Google, it would have been a 12 person team with flat headcount YoY and no obvious path to growth, owning a small part of a reasonably important teams roadmap.

I care about long run TC and wealth accumulation. The fastest path to a senior exec role in big tech is likely the best way to optimize for that. And of course I care about the work I do (machine learning).
