My friend who majored in civil engineering has been working for many years but dreams of getting a tech job for higher TC. He applied to many tech companies but it was very hard to get offers. Finally after doing hundreds of leetcodes he was offered a Google engineering residency but wants to turn it down because the TC is only 120-130k and he thinks people will laugh and judge him. What do you guys think? P.S. this is not a troll post, it is a true story
Who are these people who will laugh at him? As an older person I can tell you this, nobody except your loved ones really give a damn.
What the f? Does he know if he feels TC is low he doesn't need to share TC with others?
Hmm. Iām a mechE who would like to get the same opportunity. What did your friend do to learn computer science?
Guess open source cs or MIT ocw
Bootcamp and leetcode
Basing life decisions on insecurity is not a good recipe for success
Lowest comp plus lowest offer when converting to full time. Why would people above recommend it? Because it is google? Lol
He is nonCS , if he has a way in he should take it since it's just going to be harder in the future for him
But I heard the opposite. I guess it depends on the person. One of the eng res said it was higher than avg SWE new grad offer when converting to regular full-time.
Your āfriendā sounds like an insecure baby who would cry if he doesnāt get validation.
Not to forget: Your friend did SEVERAL HUNDRED (>700) Leetcodes, multiple final round onsites for Amazon/Fb/Two Sigma and currently works for the feds. :P
How else does he expect to break into SW without a CS background ?! Cmon after 1 year heāll be able to go wherever the hell he wants and get higher TC
Where is the option for not making fun of him no matter what? He needs to do what is right for him and his career.

This is kinda sad. Tell your friend to take the opportunity if they're happy with it and not worry about what people think.
