Rejection after cracking oculus phone tech interview

Few weeks back recruiter reached out to me saying that hiring manager is interested in talking to me regarding an engineering position at oculus. I expressed interest and asked for a call with manager to discuss role and project. Got response that they cannot share much information at this stage & sent me bunch of YouTube links about oculus research but no call with the manager. Later scheduled coding interview for which it took more than a week for recruiter to schedule the interview after getting my availability. Finally had 45 min phone interview yesterday. Was asked 2 coding questions. I wrote working code for both the problems and optimized the second problem with O(1) working solution voluntarily as we still had time 5-10 min remaining. Interviewer acknowledged the solutions to both the problems, answered my questions fine in last 5 mins.

Today I got a cold rejection email from recruiter saying I am not quite a match with what team is looking for! The interviewer who called me works in a totally different team on a different oculus product and had no idea about the role or project that the team was interviewing me for except that the team is new.

What went wrong here? Is this common trend in Facebook/oculus recruiting?

Probably "fit for team", some soft skills someone didn't think was a match.

Don’t read into it much - move on , there are 100s of reasons - if you think you did well that’s not enough - remember there are many non verbal cues , many others that’s hard to disclose - ideally as someone interviewing you should know the feedback so that you can get better, but there is nothing like “better” something that is better to one interviewer might be bad for other - so don’t try to find the root cause , keep practicing - keep interviewing .

My suggestion will be check with the Oculus recruiter to put you in touch with some product teams. If your coding was good, product teams will have interest.

I am interviewing with Oculus Research and this is what recruiter said. If I can’t make it to Oculus Research I can still try some product teams where the hiring bar is a bit lower (on domain specific skills) and skill set requirements are a bit different.
