Have been here for over 10 years and at Apple for close to 6. Planning to move back to India in next 3 years. Our base and family has always been in Mumbai and so want to relocate back there. Relocating anywhere else would not serve the purpose. Apple does not have much in Mumbai. Google is the only option I see. I am a Sr web developer and Ux Expert. Tech exp 15 years. What are the options and expected salaries/Bonuses.
Lot of things will change in 3 years including your decision to relocate. Repost after 3 years in my opinion.
Our decision is firm, posted since we wanna plan early rather than leaving it late. Would love to go next year but wanna keep the saving to afford a home in Mumbai at a good place and price, specially considering the significant pay cuts post the move
@charitykarma..absolutely right.
What are you going to to do with 401K principle amount and the earnings from it once you move back to India?
You can keep them intact and only withdraw upto $34K every year which is the new zero tax threshold; you’ll have to pay 10% penalty though. Alternatively you can just let them grow until you retire
401K has strict hard withdrawal terms. You cannot keep withdrawing amounts every year. Those requests has to be justified and Empower Retirement can deny at will. Only when there are genuine needs for withdrawal, it’s allowed with 10% premature withdrawal. Only if OP leaves Apple, there are other easy strategies to keep withdrawing amounts gradually and pay minimum tax as non resident alien.

In talks with my tax advisor no decision arrived as of yet.
Would you mind updating us on how to manage that problem? It will really help at the very least me. ☺️
Do not move family (parents) out of their home. If that isn't possible, stay put in US. Find anything in Mumbai, or work out a remote worker deal with some Pune company. Bangalore, Hyderabad, etc. too far.
Yes we don’t not want to break routine of our parents, which is why the idea is we moving closer. Remote option is good but not very easily available and viable given the network challenges unlike here. But a good option surely to look out for.
There is no network challenge, so that would be a wrong constraint to hold yourself back. Good luck!
Mumbai is more finance oriented like London and nyc. You can work as a tech guy in the finance company but you are second class there
Sorry but Mumbai is shit and has always been shitty. Before you assume anything about me, I was born and raised in Mumbai, albeit from the suburbs and not SoBo. It's truly a poor man's NYC. But upto you if you so want to move there. Good luck. Instead of Google, maybe look at something to start your own. You got Finance plus Bollywood there.
Well we accept India as is, it’s one aspect that will not change even in a while :) Starting something is surely on the minds it is also another reason to go and give back to the country. But need initial few years to set down post move.
Yeah I couldnt accept it and I ran away as fast as I could. I have no problems in saying I'm not patriotic.
Try remote options. There are companies based in Dubai and they hire people remotely
Bangalore will be your best bet... Can fly to Mumbai every weekend
We considered that but with family and parents it will be a challenge to manage and costs will just pile one, rent flights etc. Trying to avoid having foot at 2 places. Want to do one final move and so Mumbai.
Mumbai has a rising startup scene if you are open. I love the Mumbai spirit and diverse crowd.
