Relocating from CA => ATX, WFH state taxes?
There seems to be a few different answers/opinions from my research so I thought I would ask here. I am potentially moving to Austin from Cali and would be working remote/at home. Do I get to escape the bs ca state income taxes and enjoy tx no income tax even if the company originated, as does my employment, in ca? What say you Blind?
If the company says you work in TX then yes. But if they say you work in CA, then no. You need to work with your HR to make sure that your place of work is TX.
This is right. If place of work is CA then you pay CA tax. If there was taxes in TX(i know it’s not) and if that taxes were higher than CA then you pay diff to TX. Basically tax = max(work state tax, home state tax)
It is a mixed bag. While living in CA you must pay CA state taxes, once you move to TX there is no state tax. This means while you file your taxes you need to do CA taxes for those months of income. Where your job is based out of doesn’t matter, only your home address. There are a few caveats to this but CA and TX don’t border so I don’t think they apply.
This is why you don't come to blind for tax, legal, financial or other advice that requires specialized knowledge. Do you also ask your dentist the best way to write your algorithms?

Aren’t there people you can pay to answer these questions? I think they’re called... “accountants”. Just a guess. ;)

I believe taxes are based on your home address, so yes you can enjoy the no tax benefits
No, it is based on your place of employment.
I think it's based on your home address; which is why tax accountant asks for your ID. Still, companies have to update that too I think per my experience moving between states for the same company long time ago
