My wife and I have been considering moving from the Bay Area to Melbourne, Australia. Will there be a significant drop in TC? TC (mine): 240k TC (wife): 170k
No big tech in Melbourne that I'm aware of. Sydney may be a better choice. Melbourne is good if you want slower pace of life.
Curious about the rules around becoming a permanent resident in Australia
Same here. Looked into it and it seems a bit difficult.
Since I have spent some time in Sydney and Melbourne, I can tell some. First. Australia isn’t for everyone. Culture is big difference. Do not think Australia is similar to some county Ike uk or France. Job seeking isn’t trivial. You better spend some time there before making a decision
Amazon: can you point out some of the differences that were significant for you?
PM me people. I’m a tech expat who became a citizen living in Melbourne. Cost of living is fabulous aka ratio of rent to after tax income
Can you tell me more? Where did you relocate from? What are the biggest positives?
I came from Europe 10 years ago. Worked hard as a junior and tripled my TC within 10 years. Going to Google next month. Rent is so cheap on a tech salary! It’ll be like 1/10 of your total income. People enjoy melbourne for the amazing food, cultural events and parties. And “downtown” isn’t nearly as crowded as most big cities. Think of it as Vancouver/Portland, but with quite a few tech jobs/reasonably sized tech industry
Some drop in TC for sure, but big jump in quality of life! Go for it!
Thanks! Did you do this or do you know someone who did this?
Just know about it from a someone who moved. Salaries are lower, taxes are higher, but life is lot more laid back. Many large tech companies have branches there. Real estate is bloated, but still cheaper than Bay Area. Wine country nearby. Weather is great - very hot in summer, and no skiing.
