My spouse has got an offer to move to TN from company. The pay is on the higher side for TN and the city has a lot of promise (read Amazon) with low cost of living. Cons I don't have work there. I can ask for remote but dont think remote work will work for current job and team. Which means I need to find a job there but don't see lot of postings as of now. Will miss the Bay area culture, friends, our home, need to look for 3 yr old s day care setup everything new...etc but kinda fed up of the fast paced startup craze here. Long story short is it a good move to move now or is it just better to look around here? Challenge - need to decide soon... No trolling just honest opinions please. Tc ~180 + signon (under discussion)
TN is a beautiful state, mountains on the east, river on the west. Music everywhere in Nashville. There’s a reason FedEx HQ is in Memphis because it’s 4 hours flight time to most parts of the country. So you can always return and hang with your friends. You’ll do great. Go there and have fun!
You will miss Bay Area culture?! No you won’t. You should take it. Good luck!
Impossible to say without more details. What is current combined TC and COL vs expected new TC and COL? Leaving family behind? Everything else can be figured out later (daycare, friends, culture, etc.). Many friends have moved to Nashville and loved it. Heck of a lot cheaper than SFBA. May not even need second income depending on what you get a house for.
Combined tc is ~400, we will need 2 jobs after moving not for money but to maintain h1 and yes we do have family here but everything in TN is so affordable
Good info. Obviously you wont replace 400k but with half the COL you wont need to. Spouse can secure the ~200k job and you literally just need any other job to meet the h1b requirements. if you can find 60-100k you should easily come out ahead. The rest of the details are highly personal and we cannot decide those for you. Very few options are likely to meet the COL and little big city culture of Nashville, without getting too far away from CA. Maybe a Dallas or Austin or PHX but those are much larger and COL is growing. Go spend a week/weekend in Ville and see if you like it, assuming you haven't already
Seems like it may be hard to fit in if you aren't white.
The dumbest and most racist thing I’ve heard
A couple of cities in TN is fine, but the rest of the state is red as fuck. Guns, Trump, Confederate flags everywhere. Are you white?
No one cares.
Ain’t no place I’d rather be...
I’ve moved from Bay Area almost 2 years ago, Knoxville, - the best decision ever I made in my life, no regrets!!! Originally had same thoughts about missing crazy life, but it is just amazing here - mountains, skiing 🎿 - pidgeon forge - local Vegas - infrastructure, Kingston pike - strip clubs, restaurants, sport clubs - schools are great 8-9/10 without Chinese/Indian parents upscorses (comparing with cuperchina) - freedom, weapons, hunting fishing 🎣 - relaxed and nice people - and all of this with Bay Area salary TC ~700k$
Which city?
Didn't want to give out too many details but there s only one upcoming tech city in Tennessee :)
Nashville
