Do you need a PhD in computer science with several top publications to be considered for an interview? I have a PhD in applied math and working in applied machine learning for 6 years and never got an interview call for Research Scientist at these 2 companies. They wanted to interview me for Machine learning engineer only.
Congrats on your degrees though
I saw FB has Research Scientist and Applied Scientist positions. Spoke to a recruiter about MLE role. The interview sounded like a standard SWE, with no focus on ML.
The recruiter said 2 coding and 2 design. I asked when is ML? She said covered in design. It makes me think ML isnโt important. I would think it will be 1 coding, 1 system design and 3 ML covering in-depth including math, theory, and ML design.
Linguistics PhD with a dozen publications who applied to be an analytical linguist with G a month ago. Ghosted.
Can you list a bunch of recent publications leading some field that can impact the company? Thatโs the difference between a core RS and an applied one.

How to save India from destruction?
Google: generally yes. FB: generally no. Of course depends on teams (Brain/Deepmind and FAIR only consider recognized experts in their fields)
