Hello guys, just a quick question : I'm a french tech final year student and I want to candidate for data science internships in the US, and I saw online that all your resumes are basic black and white resumes, is there a problem if I have some colours and icons in mine ? Any tech HR in here ?
France sucks. What’s your Squat/Bench/Deadlift combo?
Wow very helpful.
Less Frenchies in tech.
Designer here so not tech HR but since this design related wanted to weigh in. First, I’d advise against colour resumes. Keep it black and white unless you can do it tastefully. Plus HR sometimes print on shitty printers to give to us so colour might look worse. Icons, if done well is fine. Personally I feel like standard is better for technical resumes because hr/engineers are “used to” a certain format. And if not done well could be confusing. Also might get filtered out by AI if not referred. Share it with a few friends and see if they can scan it quickly. Should be fine if they can. Don’t do the stupid skill bar charts though. Hate those.
I got some skill charts in there, feel stupid right now haha, can I send it to you if you've some time please ?
Sure, I’ll DM you my email. Probably won’t be able to check tonight though.
Don't go fancy with your design, fancy design may confuse the ATS as its trying to parse your resume, and get your resume thrown out without being seen by anyone. Just google "ATS friendly resume templates", the keywords matters much more than the design for data science anyway. If you nail the keywords (which shows you have the skills they're looking for) then you'll have a high chance of getting a callback anyway. It's important to put the skill keywords that are most relevant to each individual job you're applying to though. Just google "optimize resume keywords". I found it's pretty manual, so I've been writing a tool since I've been looking for a job to help me see what SWE keywords any particular job is looking for. Might work for data science too, I can share it if you think it'll help
Yes agreed. A custom, fancy resume could hurt more than help especially for new grads/interns who are less likely to be referred/getting in front of a real person. Though a clean easy to scan one could put them over the edge from a no to a maybe *if* it gets in front of someone.
Thank you for your detailed answer, it really makes sense, and yes sure I would be grateful if you share that with me. Will dm you .
would you say company logos are fine for better visibility and seeing it at first glance (similar to LinkedIn profile)

Many new grads have resumes that are the non standard basic black and white. Not a problem
