Return the sign on and relocation bonus - gross or net amount?

My contract says that if I leave Microsoft before a full year I would have to return relocation and sign on bonus. Would it be only the net amount after taxes or would I have to return the gross amount , so higher than I received? If the second option will the IRS return me the tax difference?

The taxes are a pain if you got paid in one tax year, and have to return the payment in the following year. Google "claim of right"
