I wanted to get an idea about GBI team in apple (framework engineering team specifically), what are the projects the team is working on and learning opportunities. How flexible is apple in terms of team changes?
Working for GBI is like running for Congress - highly politicized
And what about projects? Politics is usually everywhere. Do they have good projects?
I also got offer from this GBI team
GBI is way behind adopting new technologies and architectures. No one cares about the code quality and the design. Very few employees know programming, so forget about writing optimized code in any language other than SQL. Very less documentation is available. There's no coding guidelines, no mechanism of doing code reviews and no one is interested in doing so. 70-80% full time employees in GBI are former contractors converted to full time. So full of Indians. So expect typical Indian mentality and huge politics. Entire GBI is still heavily contractors dependent team. These contractors from TCS, Infosys, Wipro etc. are not high skilled people. Still teradata is almost everything for GBI in the era of big Data processing, distributed data storage, and cloud computing. In the age when everyone asks for real time data, GBI offers downtime during activities like software updates, failover activities, hardware expansion. Rather than fixing existing things, GBI wants to do things where it doesn't have any expertise (read machine learning). Framework team is little better compared to application teams in GBI. but still, overall, GBI is a total mess. And instead of recognizing such mess, they take it as a proud saying they've a start-up culture (It's been more than 10 years since the existence of GBI). I don't know about switching teams. But we've very few teams in India as far as I know. So would be difficult for sure. And mostly IS&T and Maps have their presence in India. GBI comes under IS&T. Every other team under IS&T is almost similar to GBI. Run away from IS&T unless you get 2-3 times hike than your current company and you don't care about new technologies and innovation and future career growth. Check out this post! "Tech bar at Apple GBI seems pretty low. (Tech Lounge)" https://us.teamblind.com/s/CLmwiSF8
This is core data engineering team. They are a joke, their management is a joke. The simplest requests require a meeting with 4-5 people repeated 2-3 times before anything gets done. We had to tear our hair out to move towards an agile model of data engineering with the team I worked with. I’ve never met bigger morons than the middle managers on these teams.
Is it good idea to get into GBI data engineering team and then move to other teams within Apple?
moving around in Apple is not so easy. internal candidates are treated similarly as external. so no advantage of being at apple already at all. also, apple policy asks the candidates to inform the manager before appearing for such internal interviews
If you have a choice, stay away from GBI.
