My goal is to get MS CS at Stanford. Coming from a low profile state school in CS, I think this MS would provide good leverage for my future. 1. Does my not so great GPA (~3.0) limit my chance to transfer to MS CS, even if I could hypothetically get A’s in their grad non-degree courses? 2. Is it worth the money? Does any company around the Bay Area pay for this? TC: 160k / 0YOE / Bay Area
MS CS isn’t worth it. Your giving up 360k earnings + tuition.
What if I do it part time? I live in the Bay Area, btw. Thanks for being honest though
Maybe if you really want to do it, but from an investment perspective it’s not a good deal. Most the big tech companies will pay you like 10k more if you have a masters. Very low ROI, very low $ / effort ratio.
MS CS is not with it; would do very little to advance your career. Far more worthwhile to focus on LC or promotions in your current role. Also, yeah pretty unlikely to get into Stanford specifically with a low gpa, but never hurts to apply if that’s your goal.
Thank you for being honest. I read on Blind somewhere saying that if I can complete a few courses in SCPD and get good LoRs, I could get in through transferring from non-degree to MS (up to 18 units) That’s why I am curious.
Following since I am planning to enroll in SCPD and wanna apply for grad school later
What courses are you planning to take?
What's SCPD?
OMS CS. Economic and viable option over SCPD. Fuckin five years from now MS in CS won't matter. The amount of CS degree is being minted in 10000s from MOOCs. So better get a degree and leetcode for the rest. Stanford would get you interview calls and so GaTech. Rest is you and your leetcode.
Are you a MIT grad? Having a chance to take a few courses at Stanford, I am amazed and impressed by how high quality their classes are. So this decision is barely based on brand name alone. I took OMCS courses once on Udacity and their education quality is not as good as Stanford tbh. Yes yes, a MS is a MS. But, what I get out of the program is more important for me. If not, I rather stay in industry. Thanks for sharing your perspective, though :)
What's your undergrad coursework look like? It's a moot point if you don't have Algos, DS or OO
Ignore the haters. Having Stanford or a top 3 on your resume is *totally* worth it and will pay off in the long run. Leetcode will only get you so far. People still go apeshit over good universities. I don’t know why, and it doesn’t make you any better than anyone else, but hey, I don’t make the rules 🤷♂️
GaTech CS vs Stanford CS. R3A7Y?
Thank you Uber, Have you studied at SCPD? How was it?
