SDE1 Offer at Amazon Seattle, am I getting lowballed?

IBM fBFv65
Mar 6 32 Comments

Almost 2 YOE
Base - 115k
Year 1 bonus - 25k
Year 2 bonus 20k
Stocks 50 RSU

Can I negotiate more? Or not?
Currently at around 140k base at IBM but no other perks.
Any suggestions appreciated.
Edit: By low balled I mean in terms of TC , and not the SDE I role itself.

Depending on your work experience in IBM, you might be seen as an early SDE1. Hence, the low base.

If you were very close to being an SDE2, they could have offered 130.

It may not be a bad thing for you as it gives you room to grow.

However, if you feel that you have relevant experience and are close to being an SDE2, then do not take this offer

If he's close to SDE2, he should reject and join a year later as L5.

The promo process in Amazon is shit and you don't want to get stuck in that if you feel you're nearly there.

I personally feel that joining Amazon as an SDE1 with 2 years of experience is a bad idea. People get promoted to SDE2s in the same time.

OP could be stuck at L4 for another 2 years. But it's worth it if his work at IBM is sh*t

I agree with that part but “room to grow” just angers me when I hear that. I was once told that they couldn’t go higher because they need to have “room to grow”.

Thanks for the replied guys. This really helps. Well at IBM I recently got reorged ( something pretty common about IBM) and the new manager definitely would take atleast an year before considering me for a promotion in my opinion.

Then stay there for a year and come here as an SDE2 and save yourself from the promo process.

Theoretically that makes sense. What I've heard is that companies sometimes also level you down since you're a new "SDE II" equivalent thus we might need to start you lower and promote you.
      But I get the point

Can we talk about how IBM is 140k base for 2 YOE

Haha. Is that really good? I got a good raise after my first year based on performance

Ibm pays 130k base as a band 7 for new grads with master degree in Bay Area, but if you’re undergraduate you only get 100k as a band 6 :)

Ohh ok. I think our undergrads get 116k in the bay and masters is like 126k. Don’t think we do raises as often tho.

We’re hiring SDE II and we’re not even looking at anybody with less than 3 yoe.

They said for SDE II they ask for at least 4 YOE. Is there something I should negotiate more? I was thinking get more in the base pay?
Or Stick with the current company

It looks like a low sde1 offer itself

I'll try for it. The recruiter seems hesitant that it'll get approved

Did you tell them your current comp?

    • IBM gyJM66
Don’t even try that. They would say “oh that’s just base, you don’t have any stocks/sign on/bonus…”.

Yes I did. I was told you're moving to Seattle and it's cheaper than bay area. I'm waiting on the official numbers as recruiter is trying to get them up from what I'm been told
      Mar 6
    • Wayfair str(10)
That's what I'm saying. If he told them his current comp he'd be negotiating against himself.

I guess I made that mistake. but luckily I wasn't told that "you don't have any sock/rsu's etc" The recruiter said I'm going to use that number to try and get you a better offer.

“Thank you for the offer but I cannot accept those terms. Based on my research and current offers, to accept the compensation would have to be 158k per year.. (pause and listen)”

They will try to say no.. blah blah. “You know my number, can you go see if this can work? Otherwise, and it’s unfortunate, but I would have to walk away.”

IIRC the band ends around 160k so they should have some room to manœuvrer.

I know a friend has similar background (band 7 at Ibm) gets 130k for base, others are similar.

SDE I has a big range and since you have only nearly 2 Yoe, the offer is not that low. I saw SDE I had TC of 150k or more but that depends on their yoe and interview performance. You can ignore this offer if you think it is low.

I guess for u easily they can give 130-135 base , and more bonus at least even at sde1, if not sde2
