How long does it take to join as SDM and get promoted to Sr SDM at Amazon, Google, Apple, Facebook etc.? Is it all performance based or you have to put in the years before you are eligible for consideration? Thanks!
I think at Google it's very hard. Don't expect a quick promotion without a reasonable tenure at that level.
Thanks! So if interviewing go for Sr SDM
Very hard. L6 SDM is already competitive and you have to be the best of the best to get promoted from there. The average dwell time is right around 4 years, but the fastest I’ve ever seen is 2.5 years and that was a pretty extraordinary situation with what this guy delivered. It gets flagged if it’s less than 3 years in role and in level, but that just means the doc will be pulled and read in TRs (and it likely would of been read for an L7 promo anyways).
What are TRs?
Agreed amazon is really hard. Theres sdms who are L6 for 10+ years. You have to have talent and reputation and luck. It doesnt come for free with time.
L6 is a terminal position, most people don't make it to l7. Takes skill, luck and timing

Worried that our top performer is an attrition risk. How do managers handle this?

Which company is best to have on your resume?
Thanks, a bit confused as another poster further down is saying that 2.5 for extraordinary case. Basically if interviewing for both I.e SDM and Sr SDM go after Sr SDM?
thanks @BestFiend. In another post folks mentioned max for SDM appears to be 350k TC. Is that the best you have seen? is it possible to push it further like 400k TC?
