Increase in IPO millionaires are directly proportional to increase in homeless poor folks. Unfortunate but true - more and more people will be pushed to brink of minimum wage with ever rising TCs. Really hope this ends.

Well, If I am earning 100k in Bay Area working for a startup then I cannot afford to buy a house in Bay Area, renting is expensive enough to have minimal to no savings- think about a college student going into 1st year college with student loan - he/she cannot afford the tuition let alone the rent - these folks are pushed to homelessness and forced to live in their vans. I am not saying rich people take money from poor - I am saying increase in salaries of tech folks are not at the same pace as increase in salaries of non tech folks. This increases the gap between the two classes and drives up the minimum wage as more and more rich folks can afford housing vs. even more and more poor folks who can’t.

@hkbest countries that don’t have billionaires are not doing so well. As for towns, you are forgetting landlords. They are often people like you and me sho happen to live ina city where real estate went up, they benefit a lot. They can sell houses with good gains and move out to cheaper places. Home ownership is huge in USA, so a lot of people benefit.

No one making $100K is living in a van.

Tech salaries drives up the salaries of non-tech. That’s why the median household pay in the Bay is $118K even though a minority of workers are in tech.

Housing is unaffordable because of regulations on building.

The Bay Area has the highest rents in the country. Even at 15 an hour a one bedroom costs almost as much as your monthly wages. (Assuming 40 hours a week - unlikely - that’s 2400... but a shitty one bedroom is 1800 minimum.)

The reason for homelessness is simple, but the solution cuts into landlord and developer $ so cities won’t address the root cause without being pushed.

Less than 4% of the population earns min wage, and half of those are people under the age of 25.

Agreed on the reason partially. A society that accepts homelessness and its primary personal causes (drug abuse, mental illness, and benefits) aren’t far behind.

I love how majority of the article talks about the way the population was measured instead of, I don’t know... explaining how officials will reduce the 30% increase... This city is a filthy joke.

Bold of you to think that city officials even have a coherent plan that's worth reporting in the first place 😂

Vote for public housing, YIMBY policies, and mental health institutions. Get involved with a non-profit or activist group.

If you are lazily complaining about homelessness while simultaneously driving up rent then you are part of the problem.

^^^ I wish these people house a few homeless or migrants in their house for a while. Provide food and entertainment. Including sexual services if and when needed. Maybe it will change their perception of reality. 🏵️

Tech should figure out how to do distributed offices do that people don’t actually move to another place for a job. It’s a challenge.

How can this be? Isn't SF filled with compassionate leftists with sufficient means to help the poor? I'm confused.

A lot of out of staters don't realize SF is the king of performative progressivism.

Bay Area liberals are some of the most reactionary, self serving petty tyrants you'll ever have the misfortune of dealing with 😒

The more you know: You don't have income inequality when everybody is poor
    Jul 9 0
  • Facebook jfq0156
NYC had similar income inequality in the 90s with the gap between those in invest banking/consulting and entertainment versus others was huge. Real estate was unaffordable for most. Homelessness and crime were at its peak when gulliani cleaned up the mess. IPOs and tech millionaires do not cause homelessness.
P.S: income inequality is a big issue. But homesslesnes can be addressed separately for immediate solutions
Also, today's gulliani is just a trump suck up.

A lot of those are coming from out of state, for instance Texas. But the part I am more interested is how would you solve this problem?
