SF to Sunnyvale commute

I’m considering this as I’m going through the team matching process at Google. Does anyone currently do this? How difficult is it?

I live in the southern part of the city.

It’s miserable. 5d/week will demolish your soul. 4d/week is almost as bad.

3d/week hurts but you’ll survive. 2d/week is tolerable.

Nowadays I do it once a week, which is a sustainable amount for me. There’s no amount of money or job satisfaction that would make me do it every day again, though.

This was with you taking a company shuttle? I hear people say it’s not an issue for them at all.

Yes this was on the shuttle, living a few blocks from the shuttle stop. Now my commute is 30 min of walking+bart.

I’ve been commuting 5d per week. It sucks. It’s been a month. Not sure how long I can sustain this.

May I ask what sucks about it? My assumption is that you can shorten your day in office a bit by working on the bus and they’re pretty comfortable. Asking because I was thinking of moving to the city myself and commuting down here.

Well, working in the shuttle is not as productive as working while you are not moving. Your daily sleep time decreases eventually coz you have to accommodate the commute. Sitting in the shuttle for 3-4 hours a day. You can’t really do any small personal chores during weekdays. All these things trigger the domino effect. Takes the life out of your life. Increases stress, takes the toll on your body and mind.

It’d be great to hear about long term effects from someone who commuted every day.

@ LinkedIn do you commute to Sunnyvale? Do you think commuting to Mountain View would be better?

Yes. Our HQ is spread out between Sunnyvale n Mountain View, 2-3 mins apart. It won’t make any difference.

I'm working in SV at LinkedIn but want to live in sf...I can believe it's brutal but I'm a single guy so living in sf has more value haha...do you think even for single guys in early 20s it is still not worth it??

It’s worth it if you use your location to find a life partner or other life-changing accomplishment. Not worth it if you just want to party more easily.

I understand it's a difficult commute but the city is well worth it. Unless one plans to just stay at home on the weekend.

Move to Sunnyvale for a year, take your google experience and apply to firms in SF.

It's pretty brutal. It's also potentially not just 1 shuttle ride. Depending on where you live in SF, there may be limited or no shuttles direct to Sunnyvale, so you'd have to use a connection from Mountain View.

It's hard man but on the other side you would love staying in the city. It's too boring south of SF. Try it for a year or less and see how you do. Also ask your manager about WFH twice a week after the first month

If you live in the southern part of the city why not just take the 280 down south?

My nearest shuttle stop in SF is Glen Park. Work in Sunnyvale. Been doing that for > 2 years and it's not that bad. I choose to play hookie (work from San Bruno) 1-2 days a week. No one cares. Every team is different though.

Long commutes suck. Would consider moving. Would find out which team you're matched to and see which city they can place you in.

Ask for a shuttle map. Without direct shuttles can easily add another 30min each way.
