SFO is an Airport, SF is the City Name

I see lots of people refer to the city as SFO. SFO is the code name for San Fransisco International Airport. The city you want to refer to is SF.

Anyone who doesn’t communicate using 0 and 1 gets it from the context of the conversation. Not worth getting your panties in a twist over it.

It's ironically mainly people who communicate in 0 and 1 that get it wrong. I know you can get it from the context but why would people choose the wrong word if the right one is even shorter

Because entering SF in a flight search has more penalty and correction than using SFO in normal conversation. So it becomes a matter of habit that you don’t even think about. Pavlov’s theory at work.

True, but then again calling it the wrong repeatedly is punishable by tar and feathering or death according to quora.

People say they are going to SEA, when SEA is in SeaTac. Or YVR, when YVR is in Richmond. Etc. It is just shorthand.

But it already has a shorthand that is widely used, it's SF. It's like calling Los Angeles, LAX

And people do call Los Angeles LAX too.

At Amazon, our buildings are all labeled by airport codes of the closest airport. So if I say I will be "back in SJC tomorrow", I literally mean I will be back in the office in SJC10, which is in Sunnyvale, not San Jose. When I go home, I don't say oh, I am back at home in SJC though. It refers to an office location since that location is labeled by airport code.

I have stopped correcting. I feel embarrassed to even correct such things as it more often than not comes out as being arrogant or rude.
