How true are these data? Seems pretty close to what’s reported on Glassdoor and Indeed.

I feel like facebook is surprisingly low. Apple is high! I am aware this data doesn’t tell us about the rank level, but still! I am not too surprised about LinkedIn - seems like a great place to have good work-life balance and great perks. Dropbox is literally through the roof looking at base.

Generally I am looking at the base because that’s the month-to-month compensation, and to it is the stable income, real cash.

Fb and google pay close to the same, but the work life balance is supposed to be way better at google, so even if you can pull out 20k more at fb, if you consider the amount of work you have to do, you’re probably making more per hour at google. I am a fb Pe leaving for google SRE in a few weeks. Pay is fairly close. I’m making a bit more at google.

Just curious if you really don’t mind. What’s your level at facebook, years of experience? Did you think PE was fun and challenging at facebook? Thanks

I’m a 4 soon to be a 5 at fb, joining SRE at a 4. I have been doing this type of work for about 5 years, but 10 if you count prior IT work. Fb is ok, I think google will be better based on the Data I have.

Fb work life balance isn’t great, someone is always messaging you nights and weekends. It’s a younger crowd than google so more people without lives outside of work, and you’re judged against them. I think I will thrive with the same level of effort at google. Fb puts too much emphasis on hacking stuff together quickly, it can cause bad habits, everything is iterative. In infra, many of the SWEs know as much systems stuff as PEs, so it’s not like most places where you can school people in Linux memory management, they already know it. But they generally suck at the shell and sysadmin tooling.

I’m exited to be a SRE because unlike fb, where you’re embedded with SWEs, SREs are the SWEs, there is no distinction to breed tribalism or animosity.

Wow thank you! What I am afraid of joining Google is the maturity so there would be nothing exciting other than pushing buttons, writing some Jenkins jobs, and writing ad-hoc scripts for the dev team (or teams) I am put into. You know what I am saying? I spoke to folks at LinkedIn and some of them complained their dull embedded SRE life. So I thought facebook would have a huge potential, by looking at their presentations at SRECon and what not. I interviewed with facebook so I was given a list of PE teams, wow, I wanted to join either the kernel team or the instagram team, I guess Infra team would just dump me down into a sysadmin. FWIW, when I applied to Google. i actually considered both Infra SWE and SRE. Anyhow, I didn’t finish interviews at either and if I do in the future, I definitely would get more second opinions. Thank you and I hope you have a great time at Google!
