SWE at trading firm?

How does quality of life compare as a SWE somewhere like Hudson River Trading vs Google? Pay, perks, workplace culture, etc? I like the idea of working on something like HFT, both for the money and for the technical challenge. I assume it's mostly the same kind of work as a Google serving system, but with cash more directly correlated with software performance.

Does anyone have experience at both?

Same pay, slightly worse wlb, no free food. Google seems better and most people in our channel think so as well. Here's a poll in our channel.

We have microkitchens with snacks but no meals at all. Everytime people ask about adding in free food like most good tech companies and even other hedges/props like Citadel and Jane Street, the execs spin some bullshit about how we're paid enough and should explore the neighborhood.

I mean personally I do think that’s a good thing. People making as much as we do should put money back into local businesses if we can help it, especially in New York. I just thought TS would provide free food just to keep you guys in the office longer if anything.

That's a completely separate debate. The point is, Google pays the same TC while providing breakfast lunch dinner which is over 10k a year post-tax if you buy lunch and dinner yourself

Not to mention the convenience of not having to go out when it's pouring, snowing, or hot as fuck to wait in line for 15 mins. The Google NYC office food is also healthier and at least as tasty as most of the $15 meals you'd buy in the city.

Citadel food is a joke, it's catering that you have to eat at your desk.

Same situation at SIG. I thought TS would do so too (if not better food like JS) just because it’s probably more profitable for them.

It's pretty similar overall from what I understand. I've never worked at Google but we've hired a bunch of people from there and a bunch of people have also left for Google.

Perks are pretty good, they have company vacations annually, ranging in extravegence from Lake George to Bermuda and Mexico.

Otherwise culture is pretty similar from what I reckon. A lot of smart people but that comes with a few string personalities.

Pay is industry average, maybe on the low end due to our bonus being paid over two years, so you'll get a pitch about your TC being X, but what hits your bank account will be less

I can't comment on the 10% growth annually though. Most of my compensation increase has been received due to me fighting for it, not via standard bonus increases

Thanks again. Interesting. My recruiter made it sound like there will be strong growth of bonus and that’s part of why ppl stay longer than most companies in the industry

I've been looking to move and have been told comp at HRT is very high. If you don't mind me asking, what is your TC with deferred bonus included? Also how many years have you been there? Thank you so much! I haven't been able to find too much data on HRT

For HRT specifically there’s a good chance your work will have more visibility and you’ll have more autonomy because of its size. This is less true for the bigger firms like Citadel/SIG/TS.

FWIW HRT has been growing a lot recently (doubled over ~two years) and that visibility is definitely possible but needs to be sought after, especially as a Dev/non-quant

The impression I got from my interview was devs at HRT were happier than devs at any other firm I interviewed with in general (was interviewing for core). Is the possibility of moving from core to algo or algo eng a generally open (if qualified obviously) thing or is it just something floated by recruiters like most firms?

A lot of people have moved. Not many from core to algo, but a fair number from ops/bizdev have made the move. Not sure if that's because most people on core like engineering vs math/research or structural opposition

That move doesn't necessarily come with a pay bump tho. From what I know, people in algo don't get a % of pnl for intracompany transfers

I wouldn’t even seek it for a paybump alone. I’d just like to know the opportunity to explore different aspects of the business is there if I want to pursue it.

Not sure if you’d be able to answer this, but what do you think about joining “startup” firms (sub 100 or sub 50 total headcount) with ex FAANG / trading devs?
      Jul 23
    • Hudson River Trading MHBQ16
I was considering it pretty strongly. I got an offer from like a 30 person "startup" firm which seemed really interesting some time ago, but I ultimately decided against it for life reasons

I think it would be pretty positive experience overall. Like working on the full trading stack sounds pretty cool. And I'm sure there are firms we've never heard about which are incredibly successful and interesting tech wise, but there's always that risk of them going under in a flash.

It's definitely something I'll consider in the future

Life is just as good, tech is worse than Google.. but where is that not the case?

I've heard bad things about some other firms culture, but haven't seen it first hand.
