First safe role in amazon is SDE 2, in other domains also next to entry roles are safe.. Likewise with which levels safe roles start in Google, Facebook and Microsoft

No safe roles, and generally less safe higher up.

From SDE 2 onwards roles are really respected very high, not very easy to fire

Only if they are competent. Incompetence at higher levels is outted faster. Jr level incompetence is sometimes given the chance to correct or grow.

I heard our “up or out,” which used to end at L5/senior, is now done if you reach L4/SWEIII. not sure if that’s true or not.

We call L4 SWE3. Not sure how it maps to Amazon.

What do you mean by safe? If “can’t be fired”, then none. I’ve seen all levels fired up to VP at both MS and AMZN

Well, everyone can be fired in private companies setting, no denying that. But being at some level companies respect or expectation changes.. You are safe as long as you are performing at that level, that's safe role.. In amazon you can't be at SDE 1 level long, you are bound to be fired, but SDE 2 level onwards no firing as such if you perform at that level, just that no promotion.. Hope it clarifies..

I’ve seen dozens of SDE2’s fired. They still have to meet the bar, which is generally rising year to year. It’s just that there isn’t generally a requirement that that have capability to get to SDE3.

Do you mean 'career level'? As in the level at which it's not 'up or out' anymore?
