Salary Disadvantage

Microsoft pupper123

I joined less than a year ago at lvl 59 and TC 140k not including one-time bonuses. I didn't negotiate at the time because I was not really aware of the practice and how common it is, coming from a different culture. I don't want to sound braggy, but I am smart and hard-working. I received my first promotion within 4.5 months of joining. My manager has entrusted me with ownership of a lot of areas and constantly values and appreciates my work.
However, now that I see other people's compensation on Blind and other platforms I feel I'm at a great disadvantage. I am learning a lot in my current role, so making a switch is not something I am thinking about. At the same time I don't feel I'm getting compensated fairly for my work. What should I do? Is a company switch the only option?

You’re so early in your career my friend. Don’t spend too much time measuring TC on blind.

Leetcode and move out. Don't think too much about it.

Don't stop till you reach 280k in Seattle or 350k in bay area.

OP check levels.fyi for Microsoft to check when you can reach 280k TC at MSFT.
I think this is L64? Not sure.

Don't worry about TC too much. Try to drive results and switch companies when you are bored.

Leetcode and never turn down interview invitations as you don't know where an opportunity may lead you.

Never discount small and medium sized companies as they can pay very well for good talent and also give you increased ownership.

350/280 number is valid. Its an inflection point where you can keep working harder and rise up the ranks but you sacrifice family life and add stress or you can stay at 330 to 370k range (260k to 300k for Seattle) and maintain great family life and focus on quality of life than moving up the ranks.

    • @foodtruckj Can you go into examples/mindsets behind what you mean by "driving results"?

Yeah you’re within the range for your YoE. Wait for promo and then move to a new company.

A lot of the numbers on Blind are bullshit. Often not outright lies, but including one-time grants as-if they're recurring and including stock appreciation as "comp".

$140K is solid L59 TC. And if you're crushing it at that level, you'll quickly advance to SDE2.

Doesn't look too bad. Only 30k or so lower than bay area salary for your experience. So, just keep working at it. Change company soon and keep learning.

Could you please share your TC and breakup after promotion? I too got a L59 offer with 109/120/25 breakup as new grad with MS degree.

If you are so smart and hard working, you should try to start your own business if money is what you are concerned about. You are not going to get more money out of Microsoft.

With a masters and a year of experience, my tc was $80k at Microsoft. It was 2007 though.
