Salary discussion

Is it OK to discuss salary with hiring manager? Or it has to be discussed with recruiter/HR?

In some places like amazon you have to do that. In general you would have that conv in long term with your manager so i dont see why its not appropriate to do it anyway.

I try not to...it just detracts from your ability to shine, and can easily make you look like a money hungry prick.

If you don't ask, you don't get. Be bold and discuss your salary and expectations. Everyone knows that everyone works for money. There's nothing to be worried about.

Yes, it's not clear what the new hiring manager thinks if we discuss salary ..otherwise they don't know what I am expecting..

If your recruiter doesn't give you the info / answers you're looking for, you can ask to talk to hiring manager. But it also depends on your relationship w the HM. You will be working for them and reporting to them one day. So it depends if you want to discuss "money" right now. It also depends on the culture of the company. It should be ok though. It's a fine line. You have to feel it out.

Just deal with the recruiter until the time is right to discuss with the hiring manager

Yes. First I have discussed with the recruiter and found out about salary range. But it's lower than what I am looking for. Then i brought it up with hiring manager. Atleast hiring Manger knows what I am expecting. I am sure hiring manager should be able to make exceptions if required.

He ll make exception IF what you bring to the table is worthwhile. The key is to demonstrate your unique value/skillset which will determine your bargaining power. Did you discuss it with the recruiter as well? What did they say? Also, showing you have a competing offer will raise your value

Wasn’t there legislation in California that was recently passed that forces companies to disclose the expected salary to candidates if they request it?
