i am currently a Sr. RF Engineer in US making a TC of 120k. I have offers in US currently that can take me upto 140k TC ( moving into a PM role). i am considering Canada as a option in the next 2-3 years or so. What kind of Salary levels should i expect in British Columbia and Ontario? any folks from Rogers, Bell or vendor companies (ericsson, nokia etc ) working in canada who can share some info ?
Are you a contractor? That salary look pretty high for a PM. I have so many engineers in my team and they make around 90-100k in Sprint.
I’m not a PM at Sprint and I am not a contractor. The PM is product management offers I have from other companies currently. 120k for Engineers after bonus is very common
Canada doesnt compare to US salaries.. And I see work culture is also very different.
How is the work culture different? Can you elaborate a little?
Income tax would come out about the same comparing to California for that that income level. Capital gain will be taxed slightly lower in Canada (based on income level as well) HST in Ontario is higher than California sale tax (13.5% vs 9.25%). Health insurance and prescription will be cheaper in Ontario but car insurance and gas will be more expensive in Ontario. And lastly based on current conversion, you will be roughly lose 30% of spending power when you travel.
House rent and property are cheaper in some cities such as Ottawa , Ontario . 140 k might come down to around 100k . Tax rates are higher. Work culture and commute in smaller cities are chill. But if you plan to move to Toronto or Vancouver it’s not a great idea - crazy traffic, expensive as hell, tax is high, and not many job opportunities ( I think that’s there almost everywhere in Canada ) But on the other side I have friends in Ottawa who love being there. They are software engineers with great jobs at Cisco , Amazon etc and great wlb, tight knit community. I lived there for a year and honestly did not like it much . May be since I have lived in the bay for decade
Probably around 90-100k, which is a good salary in Canada.
Isn't the income tax and sales tax very high in Canada? So wouldn't you end up saving less? Please feel free to correct any of my assumptions :)
It's comparable with California. Maybe the sales tax is higher and the cost of living is way higher.
