Salesmen and ridicule

I work in sales. Wireless sales. A while ago, a friend added me to a Facebook group for salespeople. It was full of insurance salesmen, car salesmen and independent salespeople. I figured it’d be an all right place to get pointers and share tips and stories about customers. Nope. It started like that, sure, but it turned into everyone bragging about their new cars and million dollar homes and a lot of bragging about how “I’m better at sales than you are.” Then, here I come. I post about some sales tactics I’ve used. I ask questions. I get ignored. I make a post about some of the promos going on at my location. I figure “Hey! We’re all salespeople. And salespeople do use cell phones. So how about I help you guys out!?” What do I get in return? I get laughed at, ridiculed and called a “bottom of the barrel salesman.” I get one person who seems interested only to find out he lives on the other side of the country and is being sarcastic. I politely bow out of the group. This was months ago and I’m still the butt of jokes in that group from what I’ve heard. So apparently working in technology and in wireless is a low end position and not fit to be in the same category as cars, insurance, etc. Shouldn’t sales workers all support each other? Just a thought.

Working at a wireless carrier selling phones isn't really working in technology

Not the point. Still working in sales.

Isn’t sales a zero sum game?

Victra MacJM OP Jul 26, 2018

Be that as in may, I must have a different frame of mind about it especially since it’s all different fields.

I think you are learning that *most* sales guys are jerks and that’s why they have the reputation they do...

Facebook public Jul 26, 2018

No, sales is competitive. Every sale you make is one less for someone else. There's no incentive for someone else to help you, it would hurt them.

Figured it’s an “I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine” thing. Different sales fields.

It's not zero sum if you're in the same product line, and especially if you're not.

TC or GTFO And I actually mean that, we can give you better suggestions if we can understand whether you're earning 50k or 250k.

He sells cellphones at a store, TC is probably <50K

Revinate JPQ Jul 26, 2018

Sales TC is based on the product or service. Not really relevant to this discussion.

Who, not whom. If you're going to be a smartass, you need to work on the smart.

lol wireless sales, why are u here..?

Revinate JPQ Jul 26, 2018

Wireless sales isn't big ticket. So they were acting superior. Probably just being happy to laugh at what they once were, and also pretending they were tougher since back in the day, they did door-to-door or something. No worries, sales is about tactics. Join again, good way to keep you from ever being like that. There will be stuff to glean. As you improve, change products too. I don't know your commission structure, but sales is hard, and you should be paid well for your effort and results.

A bad car salesman is fired at the end of the month. The ones that make the cut get at least $500/sale. More for used cars. Quota can be around 20-30 cars a month depending on dealer and walk-in flow. Insurance people get upfronts but also can have 1-2 years of residuals, and bonuses for product/service renewal. That's why you might see phrases like "book of business" when they talk about stuff. Real Estate is big ticket but slow. Middle ground is stuff like refinance with loan originators. If you have real sales skills, i.e. don't need to tease about what is upcoming next quarter, to make sales today, then get into a tech company for sales. You'll beat everybody.

I know that a good big-fish salesman makes much more than IT people. You start with phones and then may end up selling some luxury stuff or big contracts.
